All this defensive attention has bothered Cole, but the hesitancy to take shots when open from the rest of UConn players is killing the Huskies’ offense flow. Defenses are daring for somebody besides Cole to beat them, and on Saturday, sharpshooters Jordan Hawkins, Tyler Polley and Jalen Gaffney went a combined for 1-for-13 from the field, including 1-for-10 from the 3. Freshman Hawkins and junior guard Gaffney didn’t have a lot of attempts, but rather it was graduate Polley’s play that has been a worrying trend. Polley went 1-for-7 from 3 and is shooting 29.9% for the season. If you take away his Auburn game where he went 6-for-9, that percentage drops to 24.1%.
If Polley and UConn continue their offensive struggles, you have to wonder when UConn coach Dan Hurley will turn to some youth. Freshman Rahsool Diggins hasn’t played much this season, but he has the skillset to help UConn with with his offensive facilitation and ability to score off the dribble. He would also help solve UConn’s ball handling issues.
