As UConn gets ready to take on Louisville at 1 pm on ESPN on Sunday, here are some interesting statistics for your pre-game meal.

1. UConn's current 30 game winning streak is only tied for fifth all-time in program history. The #1 streak was 90 straight wins between 2008-2010.

2. In her last six games, Bria Hartley is 51 of 88 from the field w/ 21 three pointers, has 30 assists and only 9 turnovers. With 14 more rebounds and 5 more assists she will join DT and Maya as the only players w/ 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists. Historic..!

3. Last year, Stewie scored 497 points and had 74 blocks in 36 games. This year she has 462 points and 64 blocks in just 24 games. Also, her 35 assists last year are less than half this year's 72. Improvement..!!

4. UConn's 540 assists on 784 baskets comes out to a ridiculous 68.9% ratio. Opponents have only 232 assists on 445 buckets for a ratio of 52%.

5. UConn has scored 1,103 points in the 1st half of their 24 victories. Opponents have scored less than half that w/ 551 points. The result is an average margin at the half of 23 points. By game end that average margin of victory is 37.8 pts.

6. As a team, UConn is shooting 76.7% on their free throws and 37.3% from 3 pt range. Opponents are averaging 66.2% from the free throw line and only 26% on 3's. Good defense in both cases.

7. MoJeff has played 642 minutes (28.8 per game) and has only 38 turnovers. Did I mention she has 66 steals, 128 assists, 243 points and is shooting 58.2% from the field? ;)

8. UConn has forced 439 turnovers and given up only 445 baskets. UConn's 212 blocks are 15% of opponents 1,441 shot attempts.

9. Stewie has 114 free throw attempts, almost twice as many as the next player, Bria Hartley (59). She has made 92 or 81% of her free throws. Opponents have made 143 free throws total.

10. Louisville has not won against UConn since 1993. Walz is 0-10 and wears ugly shirts.:p

Go Huskies..!!

You say:

I wonder what innovative schemes Geno and CD have cooked up that would account for their excellent free throw defense. I'm sure there are NBA coaches who would be very interested in innovations in that area.

Another interesting comparison (which I am too lazy to make) is UConn free throw attempts vs. opponents' free throw attempts. I assume it would show a significant margin in UConn's favor, which would be another contributor to UConn's success.

Great stuff again - a few additions:
Uconn has more assists than opponents have field goals (540-445), more steals than opponents have assists (250-232), and more blocks than opponents FTs (212-143) or 3s (212-105)

And ... All the good things opponents do in the ball handling department - Assists (232) Steals (132) and Blocks (54) do not equal the number of Turnovers they have - 418 to 439

And this one still amazes me and continues to be true:
Uconn has more Steals and Blocks than Opponents have Field Goals ... 462 - 445!

Hopefully, this won't change tomorrow.

Joe.....I'm sure Geno has no plans to share his innovative Free Throw Defense w/ anyone during the season. :)
