I was checking out the 2011-12 Media Guide and noticed they had a listing for games against ranked teams, but no totals. Had free time and totaled them. My Uconn(Geno) thru 2011 results ;

Record against ranked teams while unranked 1- 9 (lone win vs #2 Auburn (67-63) 12/9/90)
Record against higher ranked while ranked 13-18
Record against lower ranked while ranked 160-37

TOLAL AGAINST RANKED TEAMS 174-54

Uconn also has (11) losses to unranked teams while ranked. Not sure where they fit in the totals.
12/21/04 @ Arizona State (61-50) - Uconn Ranked #8
2/28/04 @ Villanova (59-56) - Uconn Ranked #1
1/3/04 @ Notre Dame (66-51) - Uconn Ranked #4
1/23/99 @ Boston Coll (78-66) - Uconn Ranked #2
2/10/98 @ Rutgers (74-70) - Uconn Ranked #2
1/2/96 @ Syracuse (62-59) - Uconn Ranked #2
1/5/94 @ Seton Hall (74-53) - Uconn Ranked #8
1/6/93 @ St John's (54-51) - Uconn Ranked #21
12/15/92 @ Kentucky (75-54) - Uconn Ranked #21
1/15/92 vs Syracuse (68-51) - Uconn Ranked #22
1/26/91 @ Pittsburgh (61-59) - Uconn Ranked #10

With he win over OU Monday, UConn has now won 173 consecutive games over unranked teams. While each win in itself isn't much to be excited about, all one has to do is refer to Sunday's shocker in South Bend to realize what a feat it is to do what you're supposed to do night in and night out, year in and year out

Interesting to also compare Geno to Pat, who of course has been at this game a lot longer, and also played avowedly ferocious schedules until 2008 and was in a conference that usually had large numbers of ranked teams. But the winning percentages and other stats for the two legendary coaches have always been so close, that you would expect percentages to be similar for ranked team record comparisons. For the four stat areas listed above, the big differences are:

1. Pat has played more than four times as many higher ranked opponents with ranked Vols teams and has a somewhat better (though still losing percentage at 47.3% to Geno's 41.3%). Couple of factors there include that when the Huskies did break into the rankings they generally remained very high up, and higher ranked opponents are often among the top 5 teams. The Vols have occasionally slipped back in the rankings during their 36 year ranked skein (rankings introduced in 76-77) and in six years they have either 4 or 5 wins over higher ranked opponents, and in the '80s had a 10 game and 12 game matchups against higher ranked teams.

2. Pat has played a little more than double number of the games against lesser ranked opponents, but her percentage is a little lower (Geno's 81.4% to Pat's 79.7%). That also is pretty expected because of the factors cited above. Geno has a considerably better overall winning percentage of a coach of ranked teams playing other ranked teams, 75.6% to 71.5%.

3. Unranked Vols teams have been a rarity except for a two stretches for part of the 81-82 and 84-85 seasons, but they did pretty well, going 5-7 and knocking off #1 ODU during the second dry period. That gives the Vols a winning percentage of 70.9% overall against ranked teams. The Huskies 1-9 performance puts their total at 73.3% overall against ranked teams.

4. Pat has had almost double the amount of losses as a ranked team to an unranked team, as she has recorded 21 to Geno's 11. A third of those losses for Pat have come in the period since the last Husky loss to an unranked team, and 6 have come from 2008-09 to the present.

Record against ranked teams while unranked: --- 5-7 -- UT: 42.7% vs UC: 10%
Record against higher ranked while ranked: ---- 65-72 -- UT: 47.3 % vs UC: 41.3%
Record against lower ranked while ranked: ---- 337-88 -- UT: 79.7 % vs UC: 81.4%
Overall record against ranked teams: ---- 407-167 -- UT: 70.9% vs UC: 73.3%

Losses as ranked team to unranked teams: ---- 21 --- UC has 11

And one last mindless factoid. Record vs the #1 team. Pat's teams have averaged that action more than once a year, compiling a very respectable 13-21 record. Many of those games came against UConn (10 total, 3-7) and earlier against La Tech (6 total, 1-5).

UConn has only had 9 such games and gone 4-5. The main reason for the paucity of games is that Geno has always adamantly followed Pat's current policy and refused to schedule games against the Huskies.

The 76% winning percentage against ranked teams is astounding.
To help put it into perspective, C Vivian Stringer in the Hall of Fame and has a lifetime winning percentage of .737 (though 2011).
Sylvia Hatchell is one of the winningest coaches in the country and has a lifetime winning percentage of .739
Andy Landers of Georgia is closing in on 800 wins and has a lifetime winning percentage of .749

These are all records against ALL opponents
Geno has a better ratio against RANKED teams.

Alex you are absolutely right. It is the # of games, years, in which we have put up the different stats that is remarkable:rolleyes: We also have not lost back to back games since I think 1992 WOW

It was 3/17/03 to be precise. Lost in the BET and then in the first round of the NCAAs. Has not happened since. The closest UConn has come is 12/1/04, when the Huskies needed overtime to beat South Florida after losing to UNC. At least we dominated the OT period- won that game by nine points. :)

Slip of the key. I'll correct that one for you Alex: 3/17/93 for the last back-to-back. Last time UConn lost 3 in a row was just shortly before at 2/27/93 in a problematic 18-11 year. The last time UConn lost 4 in a row was back in Geno's first season of 1985-86 when the team ended the year with 6 losses in a row and then lost the first game of the next season, at the end of which Geno compiled his first winning season at 14-13.

And with a winning percentage of 96.6% over the last 5 years (174-6, with 2 losses each to ND and Stanford, and 1 to Rutgers and Baylor), the numbers would have to be superb all around.
