-> “Win back, or at least start to regain, some of the trust we were building a couple years ago amongst our fan base,” football coach Jim Mora, sweat dripping from his chin, said while discussing 2024 hopes and goals during Tuesday’s media day press conferences in the sauna that was the hilltop practice field.
“That's important to us. There's a lot of live up to when you're at the University of Connecticut. … I know I feel a responsibility to it and I think all of our players do as well. We have huge respect for what's accomplished by the other sports here, and don't want to get left behind. I'd be lying to you if I said it didn't matter to us to try to at least get on the path to try to attain some of the things other sports have attained.” <-
-> “I just feel a real sense of anxiousness from our players to go out and improve on what we did last year,” Mora said. “I don’t like to look back on last year. It is a whole new team. And when you have a season like we did last year, it's always going to linger and you don't want it to. You try to push past it. It's always going to be in the back of your mind. So as many times as I tell you, ‘We don't look backwards,’ it's always there to be quite frank.”
You won’t recognize many of the players. Twenty-seven have joined the team via the transfer portal. There are 22 true freshmen. Add walk-ons and there will be anywhere from 50-65 new faces behind masks and under helmets. <-
-> “Between the first year under Jim Mora and last year, we know what we need to fix,” said junior running back Victor Rosa, of Bristol. “We got a bunch of new transfers, a lot of new coaches on the staff, and we know exactly what we have to fix and we're fixing that. We're all ready and we're all excited. New team. Fresh team. We're ready to make plays and show you guys what's up.” <-
