UConn football team will benefit from offensive continuity
>>“We know each other so well and know all the work that we put in and that mentality that we are going to dominate whoever we play,” said junior running back Arkeel Newsome, who ran for a team-high 792 yards last season. “The execution (is better), drilling down on the details because now that we have that year under our belt with the same OC. Even before the play, everything is already processed in your brain to get your blocks or do your route. I definitely think big things are going to happen just because of how much we have grown in our offseason.”<<
>>“They probably thought about it a little more last year and now it comes to them subconsciously more and they don’t have to think about it,” Verducci said. “The speed of the learning has increased so as that happens, hopefully you are mastering the skill set. You not thinking about who to block, you are thinking about how to block them. You aren’t thinking about how to run the route, you are thinking the nuances to get yourself open. The anticipation at quarterback, the reads of the running back, the splits of the offensive line, that has all been accelerated since the spring.
“You can see in the way everything operates. They are so many fewer rough edges, that has kind of been sanded off between spring practice and summer camp. Now you are polishing things and you can see the template of what you believe it should look like where last year there were a lot of rough edges to it. It was an 11-cylinder engine and you put on eight/nine cylinders on certain plays and have one or two cylinders that don’t work. Now you see some much less of that, it is so encouraging.”<<
