UConn football: No more middle ground for East Hartford's Jones
>>As UConn gets ready to begin its 2019 season — the Huskies begin practice today and open the season Aug. 29 against Wagner — Jones could be a starter for the Huskies again. But it won’t be at middle linebacker.
Jones (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) switched positions toward the tail end of the team’s spring practices. Now he’s a “rover,” a hybrid position that is something of a cross between an outside linebacker and a defensive end.
“He’s getting better. He’s still got work to so. But I like the kill set he brings to the position. We just felt that he would be better suited to that than playing off the ball,” Edsall said Tuesday.
Despite 53 tackles last season, including six for losses, Jones said he welcomed the change.
“I like the new position. It gives a better chance to make plays for the team, for the defense,” said Jones, who was among the top freshmen FBS tacklers last season. “Our defense has grown and it’s starting to come together now.”<<
