Uconn finishes 4th in final coaches poll

Seems to me that since U CONN beat Stanford back in November that we should have been ranked third behind Baylor and ND, but like Alum I agree that this is the years most meaningless polls.

Though it is meaningless--or at least artifical--it is the final one of record.

I am not surprised. We had the most losses of the top 4. We were very close to even with Notre Dame, but just a rebound short. ND lost badly to Baylor. Stanford played them closer. Transitivity would give us 4th.

Notre Dame was 2 points short of getting all the 2nd place votes. Stanford was 5 points short of getting all the 3rd place votes. We were 7 points better than getting all the 4th place votes.

Some teams that probably exceeded expectations: Georgia Tech (Chappette!), Delaware, Green Bay, and St. Johns.

There were 6 Big East teams in the final poll. Rutgers and WVU dropped out.

UConn officially has finished in the top 10 of 19 consecutive final polls. That is very impressive. Basically, it means UConn has fielded a top 10 team for the entire lifetime and then some of girls currently being recruited.

Head to head trumps everything else. No doubt in my mind UConn was the better team than Stanford.

I agree about UConn being better. But head-to-head does have its limits. Five losses are substantially more than two, even if four of them were to the top 2 teams.

That's staying power. I think we can pencil in 23 years. :D

And Stanford's pre-NCAA schedule did not include three games vs. ND and one game vs. Baylor. I believe had the two teams switched pre-NCAA schedules, UConn probably goes into the NCAA's undefeated while Stanford has at least 3 losses.

If head to head trumps everything else in the biggest games of the year, under normal circumstances it has no limitations IMO.

Do you know how other schools rank in terms of top-10 finishes in consecutive final polls?

Tennessee probably has the record, just as they do for consecutive Sweet 16s, but their tough 2009 season keeps both from being active records. Duke's gotta be up there, no?

You guys are all missing the BIG news, which followed the useless poll: Bre throwing out the first pitch at an AAA baseball game!

I was thinking Duke has probably been in the top 10 at the end of every season since 1999........ with the exception of 2008. Just looked it up... we were a 3 seed and lost to TAMU in the Sweet 16.. and finished 25-10 and ended up ranked 9. In 2009... we were a 1 seed and lost to MSU at MSU in the 2nd round. Finished 27-6 and ranked 14th.

What is the record for the consecutive sweet 16's that LadyVol holds? I know we have the current longest streak at 19....with Stanford second at 5 or so. LadyVol is on a current streak of 3. What is their consecutive sweet 16 streak....we must be getting close?

The LVs went to 27 consecutive S16s from 1982-2008.
