-> For the purpose of this exercise, we don’t care what happened in the 1970s or 80s, or even the 90s or 2000s — that’s ancient history to a potential recruit in 2021. Tradition is nice, but it’s more important to establish a tradition of consistent winning in the last decade, and especially in the last five years. Our ultimate goal here is to identify the programs in the best shape right now, with an eye toward the next five to 10 years. <-

2022 Rank: 29.
2019 Rank: 36.
2017 Rank: 57.
2015 Rank: 60.

If we’re being honest, has anyone outside of maybe Tony Vitello done a better job with the program than UConn skipper Jim Penders and his coaching staff? The Huskies have been on quite a roll the past few seasons, going 35-26 overall with a super regional appearance last season, making a regional two seasons ago with a 44-17 overall record, and of course making yet another super regional appearance three seasons ago with a 50-16 overall record. Finally, the Huskies went 34-19 with another NCAA tournament appearance in ’21 following the pandemic cancellation season. UConn has earned the right to be called the ‘Program of the Northeast’ and now has a top-notch facility to go with a highly successful program. If I’m a non-power conference coach looking for ‘the’ model, I’m taking a trip to. Storrs, Conn., to see what the Huskies are doing on a daily basis. –Kendall Rogers

Tony Vitello has done a great job at TN but much easier to have a good program in the SEC and further south as well. Jim Penders has done a remarkable job.

Yes he has. The entire staff as well.

Now it’s on to Omaha and a CWS.

I remember another Jim who had to quiet the fanbase and get to a FF. This coaching staff is too good to not get the missing pieces necessary to get to the CWS. I’m hoping for another run but are the horses there to advance, idk.

Pitching seems like the lopsided strength going into the winter and idk anything about the newcomers (transfers or frosh).

I’m very worried where the home run production will come from this year. Padilla Dalena Minick may realistically need to hit 12-15 a piece to get close to the numbers achieved the past 2 seasons, as a team.

31 pitchers, I'm sure Coach Mac will find10 or so to lean on. I also believe pitching is their strength this year. Biller hit 12 HR's at Loyola Marymount and Grant MacArthur hit 13 at his JUCO last year and he's a monster, 6'4 and 240lbs. Minnick and Dalena should be 15 each if healthy. A few more each from Shpur, Garbo, and Padilla plus Daniels is hopefully back and ready to go. Lane and Tirado are freshman catchers with serious power. Just wondering how long it takes them to adjust to college pitching.

And out of those 31, some are injured/recovering and freshman (not ready yet/redshirt). Yet, I still agree, I think the staff has depth,

Right now UConn baseball has a 49 player fall roster. I read somewhere that the 2025 spring season will have a 40 player roster, and it will be 34 players in regular seasons after that. I would think in order to cut down to 40 players this coming spring season, most if not all of the 9 cuts will come from pitchers, in addition to players who will miss the season due to injury.

• Here’s the full conference-by-conference breakdown of how many programs landed in the Top 100, with two more newly configured conferences — the Big 12 and Big Ten — joining the ACC and SEC in the double-digit club:

15: ACC, SEC
11: Big 12
10: Big Ten
7: Sun Belt
5: American
4: Big West, CAA, CUSA
3: Big East
2: ASUN, Ivy, MAC, MVC, SoCon, WCC
1: A-10, Horizon, MAAC, OVC, Patriot, Southland, Summit, WAC, Unaffiliated

• Here’s a list of the states with the most programs in the Top 100. There’s a three-way tie at the top, as California, North Carolina and Texas land eight programs apiece on the list. That’s a decrease of two teams apiece for California and Texas since our 2022 list, and a decrease of one team for North Carolina:

8: California, North Carolina, Texas
7: Florida
5: Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, Virginia
4: Georgia, Indiana, Ohio
3: Arizona, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma
2: Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington
