Ok, so the UConn members of Team USA had lots of help from several very talented players to win the Gold at World Championship tournament in Turkey. But, UConn so disproportionally dominated the action, it's fun to highlight & analyze the statistics. Besides having UConn's Geno as Head Coach, here's how UConn did:
1. Minutes played - Coaches leave the best players on the court, especially at crunch time. UConn has the top two players, Tina and Maya, in minutes played w/ 147 & 146. Oh yeah, UConn also had the next two, DT and Sue Bird, w/ 132 & 124 minutes of action. Top 4, not bad.
2. Points - Maya led the squad w/ 92 pts total or 15.3 per game. Tina Charles was 3rd at 64 and Diana was 5th w/ 53. So UConn had 3 of the top 5. (Griner & Augustus had 74 & 56 pts.)
3. Assists - Amazingly, despite leading the team in scoring, Maya was also 2nd in assists w/ 21. DT was first at 27 assists and Tina & Sue were 4th and 5th w/ 13 each. (Whalen was 3rd at 16.) 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th for UConn.
4. Rebounds - Tina Charles led the team w/ 50 rebounds including 17 offensive boards. BG was 2nd at 37, but Maya was just behind her at 36. UConn finishes 1st and 3rd.
5. Three point baskets - Only two USA players made more than two 3 pt shots, Maya w/ 14 and DT w/ 8. Maya was 14-27 for 52% and Taurasi was 8-20 for 40%. Sue had one , so UConn had 23 of the 28 made 3's. That's 82%.
6. Steals - Sue Bird, despite being old and decrepit , actually led the team w/ 5 steals..!! (She tied w/ Angel who had 5 as well.) Tina and Maya had 4 each to tie for 3rd place. UConn leads in larceny.
7. Technical fouls - Diana tied for 1st w/ one..!!
Go Huskies..!!
