>>Fresh off a weekend sweep of Cincinnati, the UConn baseball team (32-20) begins a regular season-ending four-game road trip with a midweek tilt at Rhode Island (22-20-1) on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies and Rams will square off for the 182nd time in the respective histories of the two programs, with URI the most-played opponent in UConn's history. As long as Zapata is his usual self, this should be a win. Need this win to keep the hopes of an at large alive/reasonable. Without it they need to sweep Houston in addition to having a solid AAC tournament showing.

Up 1-0 on a Sundberg homer. Bases loaded, nobody out Top 1. I don't think there's GameTracker today.

T1 | Max McDowell lifts his NCAA-leading 10th sacrifice fly of the year to center to plate Siena. #UConn 2, URI 0

T1 | Now Willy Yahn gets in on the action with an RBI single that scores DeRoche-Duffin. #UConn up 5-0, Rhody making a pitching change.

Just got home, flipped on the radio. I sometimes listen to WRIU the University of Rhode Island radio station in the evening, and I had left it there last night. So that is how I found out that both WHUS and WRIU are carrying the game today. It's rare when you can say that about two college radio stations.

Zapata does sound good today, seems to be showing good control, which is not always the case for him.

WHUS guys say both Over (due to injury) and Darras are not available today.

Bases juiced top of 7th, no outs.

11-2 UConn lead in bottom of 7th. Montgomerie in to relieve, I believe the first relief stint he has had since his string of midweek starts. First batter gets on, but is erased on a double play, and then Mongomerie quickly gets out of the inning.

Nepiarsky makes what seems like his now customary late inning midweek relief appearance in the 8th. Allows his first hit allowed (in 9 innings of work) to the first hitter he faced.

.-.
Nepiarsky strikes out the next hitter. Ryan Radue is now coming in to relieve him.

A run scores, Radue gets an out, and now Max Slade (who hasn't been in a game in a very long time) is coming in to get the final out of the 8th. I guess Penders wants to get a lot of relievers some work in the last midweek non conference game.

I was thinking that a midweek rout would not be complete without an appearance by Callahan Brown. Sure enough, Brown is in to pitch the 9th.

Brown gets two outs, and now the really seldom used Joe Rivera is coming on to get the last out.

Game Notes:
  • UConn is now 113-65-4 all-time against Rhode Island
  • Jack Sundberg hit his first career home run to lead off the game in his 478th career at-bat
  • Willy Yahn recorded his 17th multi-hit game of the year and the first four-hit game of his career
  • Vinny Siena scored twice and now has 61 runs this season, eighth in a single-season in program history

The Huskies return to action when they kick off a three-game American Atheltic Conference series at Houston on Thursday night. The Huskies and Cougars play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday in Texas.

I really think winnin 2/3 vs Houston which is no easy task and a win in the opening game of AAC tournament and we're in.
