Great timing: UConn athletic department in 2018: generated $40 million in revenue, $81 million in expenses - Hartford Courant

>>The biggest individual team culprit of the UConn athletic department’s 2018 deficit was the school’s football program, which lost $8.7 million. Additionally, men’s basketball lost about $5 million, women’s basketball lost about $3.1 million and the rest of the school’s sports lost about $22.3 million among them.

Ticket sales during the 2017-18 season showed the men’s basketball team had its lowest attendance numbers in 30 years, which led to a reduction in revenue generated by the team. While the revenue produced by the football program held even from the previous year, the women’s basketball team saw an increase of about $1.2 million thanks, in part, to improved attendance.<<

Just kidding. Country is a debt based economy anyway.

Wow. Good thing most students like sports. Although they probably don't like it enough for $434 each if they knew the breakdown in the annual fee.

the school’s athletic department received the highest university subsidy (about $42 million) of any Division I public institution and that its allocation as a percentage of total reported revenue (just under 51 percent) was higher than that of any other public school in one of college sports' six biggest conferences.

As of February, Storrs-based undergraduates paid a $1,914 annual fee to the university, of which $434 went toward athletics.

It’s more than that. That’s their 30 million too.

If this surprises you then good job on covering your eyes and sticking your fingers in your ears for the past 5 years. But 2024 is only another 5 more years away and of course we can continue to sink knowing our football team will be a power by then being begged to join the P5 before the Big Split™ sending the Big East into D-II purgatory and us into the promised land.

Who doesn't enjoy doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result?

If you're going to attempt to mock me and look mind-numbingly stupid in the process, you could at least get your years right.

This just sloppy reporting by the press. Royalties, licensing, advertising, and sponsorships of $14.1 million are not allocated to teams. Which teams generate those revenues? Primarily football, men's basketball and women's basketball. If you allocate those revenues to those three sports, they report a deficit of $1.7 million combined.

Yes, we need more revenues and we have high expenses, but the problem is not football and basketball, but they are the opportunities for revenue growth.

What kind of athletic department lets this kind of story run all day and doesn't issue a statement to clarify and correct the matter? Absolutely crazy not to get out there to address this story.

The one that can’t count to 85. The one that can’t publish an accurate roster. The one that thinks building a 2k seat hockey arena makes sense. That one?

I wouldn’t release anything. The numbers are the numbers, the sooner it comes and goes the less attention it gets.

If its accurate then don't release anything. If its grossly in accurate or missing major chucks of revenue /royalties/etc, I think its foolish to not address it. You could issue a statement or pick a couple of your favorite reporters to write your version of the story.

Had the they paid into the B1G at $100 Million a few years ago, we would be breaking even in perpetuity. Instead, we will lose $200 million over the next five years.

It’s accurate in the sense that UConn came up with the numbers.

That’s the best UConn can make it look. It’s not like the Courant broke into the computer lab and downloaded it off a server.

Remember when Warde and Susan told is everything was going to be alright when Louisville got the ACC nod over us? I remember.

We could cut all sports and bring that deficit to zero.

They both are disasters for UConn. At the same time, the taxpayers of CT are subsidizing the entity (ESPN) that could have used its influence to avoid this whole disaster.
