UConn at SCar

Uconn thought they were playing a Big East team.

Yall embarrassed ALL of the Carolinas today. We should just start calling y'all South :p

I kinda feel bad for the all the chicken fans who paid top dollar to witness that carnage :oops:
That would be me. Today we are just shrinking into “Carolina”. We aren’t even fighting over who owns the rights.

Some weaknesses were exposed to day, especially in the front court and the perimeter shotmakers. Although overall team speed and athleticism is great, Te-Hina and Chloe are not up to the standard of the rest of the team in either category, and especially on defense. But there are still significant strengths on this team and I consider SC one of the main contenders for the NC. It seemed to me like the team peaked too early, maybe in the Oklahoma game, and hasn't sustained the same level of intensity since. But there's still time to recapture it. I doubt it will be easy for Texas, UCLA or UConn to beat them twice. I'd guess ND is the main threat to another SC championship.

Also, when I consider what the team might look like next season, I think SC may be even stronger than this year, even without one of Dawn's typical recruiting classes. Especially if Milaysia can learn to focus all her immense talents on running the team as the main PG. I assume Raven, Bree, Te-Hina, Sania and Sakima will have moved on, and I see a starting lineup of Milaysia (PG), Tessa (SG), Chloe (SF), Ashyn (F) and Joyce (F), with Maryam and Adhel available off the bench for the front court and Maddy in the backcourt. This looks like a dynamite rotation to me even if Dawn doesn't add any transfers.

Very kind analysis IMO. I think yesterday’s game showed Gamecock fans what we’ve quietly whispered among ourselves since the season began. This team just doesn’t have the big physical inside presence needed to complement SC’s plethora of outside options. When we rely too much on our guards and outside game, it dooms us.

Even before Watkins went down, this team had trouble matching up against big centers, for example, Betts destroyed us. But after Watkins, Oldacre had great games against us twice. El Alfy had probably her best game so far of her career against us. Our rebounding numbers this year tells the story. Not horrible, but not to the standard of our program.

I will never completely count out Dawn because she’s a great coach and motivator, but I wouldn’t fault any gamecock fans for lowering expectations based on the results of our games against the most elite teams.

As far as next year. Dawn has already said she’s hitting the transfer portal hard. Watkins will likely not be ready until next spring. Our post depth is unseasoned and right now we only have one recruit signed for fall. I’m hoping for good news from Makeer because we need her and then some.

This would not surprise me at all. I wonder who the transfer candidates will turn out to be. As for Makeer, she looks too physically slight to be able to anchor the post. She seems like a long wing to me. But she'd be an excellent get, if Dawn can pull it off.

What I've noticed among the UConn faithful these last couple years is a tendency to overlook the strengths of the team, probably because we look too closely and dissect things too much. I have a feeling Gamecock fans do the same thing. There is a great team in Columbia, though it can stumble. I'd say they're a lot stronger than the LSU team that won the NC two seasons ago.

Makeer would definitely be a 2/3 for us. The way Dawn utilizes her bench, we need guard depth as well. We only have 3 returnees at guard next year: Fulwiley, Tessa Johnson, McDaniel. Raven has eligibility, but it’s not a guarantee.

While I agree, is it not also ridiculous that we're tolerating these prices and paying them? What I'm hearing what some of my friends pay only to hear them complaining about the cost of living 5 seconds later makes me question their grasp of reality sometimes.

Has Raven indicated any interest in returning?
Most likely it'll come to a post season conversation with the coaches and their blunt observations. As stated by Coach Staley, Raven has a goal to be a first round pick in the WNBA draft. If they feel like she won't make that round, then she'll probably come back. Based on her current projections it seems like she'll be an early second round pick, so I am inclined to believe she will return. And honestly, just based off the top of my head, I think this is a really strong guard class and she may have better odds next season just based off of next year's talent pool.

Edit: I think she is the #5 guard (and #4 PG) in this class (behind Bueckers, Miles, Paopao, Rivers, and Fudd) vs. the #3 Guard (and #1 PG) in the next class (behind Latson and Flau'jae).

I was wondering recently whether Raven would return or go pro. It has never occurred to me that she might transfer.

If I were SC I would not overreact. Every team has had one or more stinkers this season. No one saw a 29 point gap. UCONN brought the heat, but SC appeared checked out mentally early in this one.

I honestly think the team mentally went on cruise control after the gauntlet. I think they got a little too comfortable with how things were going. I hope this game was a wakeup call.

This. Did you see how unfazed she looked in the presser? Better to have flaws exposed now than in March.
