A milestone in the construction of UConn’s newest residence hall was marked on Monday with a topping-out ceremony.

As the first project begun under the auspices of the Next Generation Connecticut initiative, the event signified a milestone for the state as well. Known as the STEM Residence Hall for planning purposes, the building will be called “NextGen Hall” when it opens.

Plans for the residence hall include creation of a new learning community for students pursuing majors in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

“Anywhere you go in higher education, you’re likely to hear people talking about those so-called ‘STEM’ disciplines,” said University President Susan Herbst. “This project is proof that at UConn, we’re doing more than just talking.”

One of the most ambitious state investments in economic development, higher education, and research in the nation, Next Gen will transform the University into a top public research institution that fuels Connecticut’s economy through new technologies, highly skilled graduates, and the creation of high-wage jobs.

Warde Manuel, director of athletics, spoke during the topping-out ceremony for Next Gen Hall. Cue Conspiracy Kitty. :D

My old dorms at UConn had none of the comforts that today's dorms generally have. That said, I would prefer to 'rough' in a dorm for 4 years and be able to afford to move out of Mom & Dad's right after college into an apartment in the city than have a 4 Star Dorm and then after gradation, have to move back to Mom & Dad's due to a mountain of college debt.

Never heard of a "topping out ceremony" until just now so there's proof right there of UConn's committment to higher ed. What more does the B1G need?

But what are Warde, Jonathan, and the cheerleaders doing at the celebration? Without Susan coming right out and stating "We're leveraging excellence in athletics to catapult this university forward academically" could it be any more obvious that's what's going on? And athletic excellence does not equate to any conference with an acronym consisting of some combination of "A" and "C." Its B1G or bust and if UConn is truly committed to "Go B1G," we're going B1G. Take that to the bank.

That's exactly what I thought. Out of everyone they could have had as a speaker, why is Warde there?

Nice. If you found just this photo, you would think they were dedicating a new basketball or football facility rather than a STEM building with LEED Silver standards. Message sent.

What is the construction worker behind Susan looking at?

For that matter, what's Susan looking at? You don't think Jim Delany, Urban Meyer, and Jim Harbaugh were there, do you?

Pshaw. Give me Hicks 102 or Sprague 250 all over again. The only amenity I needed was Saran wrap over the windows to keep the drafts out.

Sincerely,
Get off my lawn
