I found some interesting comments from everyone on here and as a long time follower of Cori and pers on who did watch 15 of their games last year here are my observations: She’s a great recruiter of talent with limited coaching ability to evolve her teams. What you see in November is what you get in March. I would agree that this years team has oodles of individual talent, probably the second most of any team in the country. Besides Cori’s coaching limitations, this team is also short on ball handlers and a true backup point guard. I absolutely think Kneepkens has been vastly underrated and really is a wonderful player. That said, I don’t think Cori will figure out how to maximize her skill. This team is very limited on ball movement. Many posters listed Kiki’s proneness to slow down and play only a half court game and they are right, she simply dribbles, dribbles and dribbles some more. This MAJOR limitation is due to a restrictive offensive scheme that was almost solely successful by dumping the ball down low to Betts. UConn was able to deny that avenue and UCLA struggled mightily. Gianna and her wonderful 3 point shot would be a great alternative BUT I need to see Cori actually create that option which will require ball movement and passing. Not exactly Kiki’s or CLW strengths. Their front court size and ability will dominate most teams but come post season, their back court limitations will be exposed and UCLA could struggle. To me, the top 5 teams of talent are UConn, UCLA, SCar, Texas and Oklahoma, followed closely by LSU (who are missing size after Koval and will be very young). But a favorite saying is coaching trumps talent means SCar and Texas are ahead of UCLA. From a Big Ten perspective, I see Michigan posing a light and limited threat to UCLA. The Big Ten has no other teams with the size or depth of UCLA so I’d be surprised if they will lose a conference game. Overall, I will say seeing this thread is a “plus” especially with all the variety of posters offering good insight and perspective vs some of the other team threads which are dominated by their ONE fan who seems to just post incessantly. I am looking forward to watching UCLA play this year and hope all these posters stay engaged.
