It isn't just the coach, its the pool of talent from which he draws. Lets be realistic, HS football talent in other regions of the country is far advanced from what you find in northeast (NE, CT, NY). I don't care who the UConn coach is, they will not get top rated recruits like UAB or most other p-5 schools. And we will not get a big name coach like the other AAC schools for the same reason...rich talent pool from which to build a resume is not readily available in this area.
Don't forget, when Lou Holtz went to South Carolina to turn their program around, the first year he went 0-11 or 0-12 and had plenty of bad losses in SEC. Yet they still had 75-80k in attendance for their home games. Why? Because they had a coach that could draw from a region heavily ripe with talent, even after being picked by more prestigious BCS programs.
I could understand why the UAB coach was able to become successful for the same reason.
