Tyvon Branch to sign franchise tender today

The Raiders will get Tyvon Branch back in the mix today.

Branch, the free agent safety who is the Raiders’ franchise player, will sign his one-year tender offer and report to the team, NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports. That means he’ll get a guaranteed base salary of $6.22 million this season.

A month ago reports said that a long-term deal between the Raiders and Branch was in the works, but nothing has materialized there. Branch still wants a long-term contract to stay in Oakland, but he’s willing to play on the franchise tender for now.

The 25-year-old Branch was the Raiders’ fourth-round draft pick in 2008. He has started all 16 games for each of the last three seasons.

he has been a somewhat unexpectedly great player for the past 3 seasons. at least 2 of them should have been pro-bowl seasons.

happy for him. great for him, and great for UCONN

i hope he gets the long term deal he deserves.

I've read a few articles about it... and it seems like he will. They have like no cap space now... and in an interview the GM said that there wasn't any contentiousness at all between Branch and them. That being said: 6.22 mill. is a nice consolation prize. :)

was he playing under his 4th rd pick rookie contract up until now? if so the man really deserves a big time signing bonus and a long term deal, not a one year franchise tag. talk about overplaying your salary

Good for Tyvon enjoy your riches maybe Wilson and Gratz will join you soon

Tweet from former NFL scout Daniel Jeramiah @movethesticks had this to say today

Tyvon Branch has arguably the best man cover skills of any safety in the NFL. #Raiders #NFL

Nobody liked the way our former coach left us but boy did he know talent!!!How many stars was Branch??

Tyvon is the most productive NFL player to come out of UConn in the 1-A era so far. Lots of players have contributed significantly to NFL teams in the past 7 years, but nobody like Tyvon. The fact that Branch has played for the Raiders, in relative public obscurity outside of the Pacific northwest is the only reason he's not a multiple year pro-bowl selection right now.

If the Raiders did not suffer so much the past decade and actually made the playoffs, he would have been in.

That and Troy Polamalu plays his position and the pro bowl only selects one strong safety per conference.
