Both the Yale Bowl and Rentschler Field should go to hybrid natural turf system. Both fields are below grade and close to the water table. It is part of the reason the fields look and play terribly as early as October each year. It only makes sense to use modern technology to maintain the historic look and supplement the durability and feel on the playing surface. The days of the miniature golf putting green over a cement slab are long over. I would think Walter Camp would agree.

Been begging to bring turf to The Rent for years. Mostly so they can go back to having concerts and other events there more frequently. But..........since US Soccer loves playing there on the grass.......it won't happen anytime soon. Not to mention, take away the grass...and we probably don't win games like the UCF one in that weather. Turf neutralizes the weather factor to a certain degree.

Honestly - if teams dont want to play UConn at the RENT due to capacity I would rather use the Yale Bowl than Meadowlands (or whatever it is now) -

Maybe Michigan wants to come back if there were 80000 seats available

The soccer thing really gets under my skin. How many times is US Soccer going to play at the Rent each year? If it wasn't for UConn football would US Soccer even have a venue near Hartford to play at? Is the soccer community willing to poney up the kind of money that was raised for football to build a multi-use facility or upgrade the Rent? If soccer is such a big deal in this state is that community willing to share in the expense of maintaining the Rent and provide adequate field conditions for top level Div 1 football? Because from what I see it looks like soccer benefits from being able to play on a football field and not the other way around. If the soccer world had built the Rent I could see an argument for keeping it natural turf but that's not the reality of the situation and the sooner that the Rent's field is upgraded to the best possible field conditions for D-1 football the better for the "FOOTBALL PROGRAM"!!

I must be missing something. How does adding lights make it a year round facility?

Midnight New Years eve Yale Harvard outdoor hockey?

Except your point is moot because UConn does not own the Rent so it is not solely a football facility in the eyes of the operators. So in order to make money on a multi-use facility, other events need to be held, like US Soccer. Like it or not but when the National Team comes it draws a solid crowd and probably brings in as much as a football game does so count it as an additional football game. So until UConn owns the Rent and wants to run it how they want, the people who own it are going to continue to cater to all interested parties who want to have the Rent host an event for them.

What was UTC's intentions when they donated the land? So US soccer could come once a year? I was under the impression it was so that UConn could build a football stadium there. I am pretty sure that's what the state had envisioned also but I could be wrong.

Because having the best soccer facility in New England gets more national attention/draw than UConn football does. More travelling fans injecting $$ into the local economy than the home base for FB as well.

You don't have to like it, but its true.

UTC's only control point is that the facility has to maintain the name Rentschler Field in some capacity for, I believe, 30 years. Outside of that, it doesn't matter one iota if they wanted it to be for UConn football or field hockey- as long as US Soccer draws big attention & crowds, they're gonna keep having the games there.

US Soccer is gaining in popularity across this country every month. The US-Ecuador match in October was a darn near sellout. Attendance was more than what we had for the BYU and Boise State game AND more than the Maryland game last year. We are nuts to think that grass is being replaced. The Rent (Hartford) is also being considered for future International Tourneys as well...so it's not going anywhere.

Yes because, "That's the way we've always done it," is a foolproof reason against any progressive change. Even FIFA doesn't think that anymore.

A hybrid turf system would benefit both Rentschler Field and Yale Bowl, and they would still be able to host all sorts of events.

Total Nonsense. Yes, the same core crowd travels around pretending us soccer is taking off. The only football that matters in the US is the one with the pigskin. Culturally, the game does not fit. Too slow, too boring, not enough violence. That said bringing in more events is a good thing for local business. Just don't delude yourself that soccer is supplanting football anytime soon..at least not until the U.S. is fully pussified by the socialist elite seeking to transform us.

When those socialists come to take over they will probably force the NFL to institute a salary cap and revenue sharing so the small market teams can compete. That'll be the day!

The last thing UConn football needs is turf.

Well it's the second to last thing. The last thing would be a dome where they couldn't beat Southern teams on weather.
