I don't know that one but here's an interesting and little-known fact about him: growing up in Christopher, Illinois, his next door neighbor was the actor John Malkovich.

He was the first player taken in the NBA draft. Stewie was first taken in the WNBA draft. Probably not what the OP had in mind. But here's a little known fact. Doug went to the Philly Sixers (who were truly atrocious), but came very close to being a Chicago Bull. All the trade details (save one) had been worked out, and publicity leaks were springing up constantly. The Sixers would trade their #1 draft choice to the Bulls for a player and cash. Doug went to Chicago on draft day, and the publicity machines were revved up. Then the bottom fell out. The key player offered in trade by the Bulls, Clifford Ray, failed his physical with the Sixers. The deal was aborted at the eleventh hour, and Doug was on a plane to Philly.

As brilliant as you all are, this trivia is just too too trivial to let this go on.

Last night ESPN reported that UConn has entered the tournament undefeated 7 times...this upcoming will be #8.
They said in the 7 previous UConn has won the ring 6 times.

The one that we fell short?
1996-1997 we lost in the final 8 to our former beloved rival LadyVol Herself.
Our frosh class included Paige Sauer, Stacy Hansmeyer and Shea Ralph...maybe there was another but those 3 were
the prime ones. Hmm...Geno's first major 'national coup'? First time not from Pennsylvania east and DC north?
Paige and Stacy were from Oklahoma...Shea of course from North Carolina.

Anyway: first round of the tourney....in Gampel....against Lehigh. Shea goes down with her first ACL tear.
In the elite seats watching the game was Doug Collins....his daughter played for Lehigh.

An aside to that story, when Shea went down and cried out every father with a daughter involuntarily stood up, it was a primal reaction to her and ver unusual happening, the wives all looked at us and said what do you think your going to do...Anyone that was there would remember that...

I believe that Shea has never watched that injury. You are correct that those of us at the game will never forget the scream and the silence that followed.

Off the top of my head (though probably not the answer of which you are thinking/seeking):

- Doug Collins is the father of Chris Collins, who played his college hoops at Duke before becoming a longtime Duke assistant coach and later taking the Northwestern head coaching job.
- Before he became an assistant at Duke, however, he spent one summer as an assistant for the Detroit Shock - 1998 (the Shock's inaugural season) - under head coach Nancy Lieberman.
- The collective poor records of Lieberman (1998, 1999, 2000) and her successor, Greg Williams (2001), led to the #2 pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft, when the Shock took UConn's Swin Cash.

Nice work. Wrong but nice anyway... ;-)

Curse you for bringing up 1997, especially this year when the team is just 1 injury away from big trouble.
