One week into September, 26 games to go, and Paul Goldschmidt has not only put together one of the more incredible seasons in recent memory but making a run towards the triple crown.

Batting average - .329 (1st, leads by .06)
Homeruns - 34 (3rd, 2 behind 1st place)
RBI - 107 (1st, leads by 1 over 2nd and 17 over 3rd place)

Also 2nd in total bases, 3rd in hits (159), 6th in walks, 11th in doubles, 1st in OBP, 2nd Slugging, 2nd WAR.

All while only 35th most at-bats for the year in 129 games (out of 136).

Let's see where he is in a week.

One week later and his bid has fallen, well, not off a cliff, he still has a shot, but it has fallen.

BA down to .322, in 3rd place, now .007 points behind first.
35 home runs, now in 3rd, 2 behind first.
109 RBIs, 2nd place, 1 behind first.

Also, 3rd in hits at 162, 19 behind first.

Would be nice to see a hot 3rd week of September to regain first in all 3 categories. Just shows how freakin' difficult a triple crown is. I think by the 21st we will have a very good idea of whether he will be able to do it or not.

Ya, clearly missed that. Wouldn't that be amazing if there were two? Making up .1 is a tall order (or is that .09, does a tie count for the triple crown) but lets see. Both require a bit of a hot streak (average-wise).

When Yaz won the triple crown he tied Killebrew for the home run lead. It is however far more difficult to tie in batting average as they realistically would need identical at bats and hits (in 1970 Alex Johnson beat Yaz were virtually tied at .329 and Johnson won by I believe .0002 points).

One thing that would be feasible but won't happen would be Judge giving up trying for home runs the remainder of the season and just worrying about making contact and hitting singles. Realistically, nobody will catch him in home runs and it would take an incredible run for someone to catch him in RBIs even if he were to finish this season as a slap hitter.

If somehow both Arraez (.320) and Bogaerts (.317) drop to .315 or lower, Judge could pass them with a reasonable finish. There are however a few other batters who would be in the mix and with a strong finish could approach .320 and require a torrid run by Judge to keep the batting title within reach.

He has been on fire of late! 2 HR game, 3-4 overall batting that same game, he very well could do it! I really think he could. I bet he gets to 63 or 64 HR for the year and maybe wins by a few 1/100ths BA. He used to strike out a lot too if I recall correctly and he has cut back on that this year.

HR and RBI are basically in the bag with 16 games to go. Just needs to get that BA up a little.

Not normally a Yankees fan and would have enjoyed watching the DRays or BlueJays catch them, but these last weeks should be interesting!

As a side note, hey Orioles, get 6 more wins, and let's get a nice win streak to end the year from the Sox to have one of the few divisions ever in the history of the MLB with all .500 or better teams. Sox (71-75) need to finish 10-6.

One amazing thing is that Judge has caught up to Arreaz and Bogearts so quickly without the two of them dropping off at all.

1 week later
9 games to go.
First place in all 3.

BA .314, leads by just .001
HR 60, leads by 23, in the bag
RBI 128, leads by 11 still, almost a sure shot barring some super hot streak from Ramirez.
