Our big lineup without a point guard worked when Liam went off for 38. But then it lost to Seton Hall, which beat us with heavy ball pressure and we couldn’t score. Our lineup with Mahaney trying to be a point guard got punched in the mouth by Memphis and it’s ball pressure. Diarra became our team mvp for a reason. Cadeau has limitations - but the dude had 20 assists in 2 tournament games. He can get us into stuff and get guys the ball in their spots. We can run around and around in circles all we want but if guys with the ball are flustered by ball pressure and don’t deliver the pass in time, it’s wasted energy. Yes we had size at every position when we dominated the country. But all five guys could pass. Is it the size or the skill that made it work so well? Combination of both, really. But can we find a 6-6 point guard again like Jackson or Castle? You can’t just take a guy who’s 6-6 and force him to be one. Maybe Demary can really do it - but 6 assists and 18 turnovers against Marquette and St. John’s doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies about his ability to handle ball pressure. Small sample size - but he has only one or two box scores in his career where he looks like he was playing point guard. And if he can’t our offense humming, we don’t have another choice. Diarra is gone. Mahaney we don’t know - but the track record isn’t great. A 6-4 Cadeau who could shoot a little better would be perfect. Or a good passing Demary would be perfect. But neither exists. The Drake kid would have been ideal. But our current pieces are a huge step down passing-wise from two years ago and that’s something we need to address as much as size.
