The mayor of Torrington says she doesn't believe UConn can close its satellite campus in the city without going to court.

Mayor Elinor Carbone told the school's Board of Trustees on Wednesday that because the campus was a gift, the school has legal obligations to the trust of Julia Brooker Thompson. Carbone is seeking a legal opinion from Attorney General George Jepsen

With so few students choosing to attend the Torrington branch (only 88 full-time, 136 total this year; decline in traditional university age students, and 37% decrease in undergrads since 2011: Source: Courant article), only 1 full-time tenure tracked professor of 8 total, $9 million in reported required repairs, classes of as few as 3-5 students, improved video course access, a nearby community college, and the recently enhanced Waterbury branch 20 miles away, closing the branch appears to make too much sense?

Just because a trust donated some property 1/2 a century ago for the branch and perhaps some $, how long is a recipient required to keep a money-losing branch open for fewer and fewer students? Good luck to the mayor.

Yeah, this is a "nice to have" that's well past it's sell-by date. Close it.

Smart move would be for the State to absorb the CSU system into the UCONN branch system.
