Berry Tramel: How Notre Dame could help out the Big 12 Conference realignment: Getting the Irish to agree to full membership in all sports but football, and a potential scheduling alliance on the gridiron, could save Conference Chaos.

First, Chip Brown (Texas) says ND negotiating with Big 12. The Globe says ND is also negotiating with the ACC. Now more of the Big 12/ND stuff. Precious.

ND is floating stories to improve their lot. This tells me they are concerned that other BCS conferences haven't been as receptive as they anticipated about partial membership for the Irish.

IF Notre Dame is negotiating actively with the Big 12, what are the chances that part of the negotiations are a golden parachute for the remaining Big East football schools? As has been posted previously, the Big-12 doesn't participate in soccer & certain other sports that Notre Dame is very competative in. The Irish would need the Big East presence for a home for those sports. Take the Big East schools & you are at the magical #16. It's an almost perfect fit. That's why it won't happen.

Do you believe for a second that ND cares at all about any of the schools in the BE? They are pubicly telling the catholics (which they happen to be one of) that they are not a good enoiugh conference for ND if the football members split. They have told the football members all along that they will take steps to help that side of the conference (to placate them) only to alter them before they can be held to their commitments (the agreement to play four BE games each season, the l;ong term agreement with Rutgers which was cancelled when ND wanted to change all RU home games to Meadowlands neutral site/split gate games, the agreement with us where ND wanted to change NFl venue UConn home games to neutral site/split gate games).

If ND pushes for anyone into the B-12 it will be us because they value the men's & women's hoops rivalries but it also will include them forcing us to take some bullet for them in the process.

There's a sucker born every minute. Or at least Notre Dame is hoping that's still the case. I hope nobody is dumb enough to take them as a partial member. All it does is throw whatever conference into an unstable situation.
