I have two reactions. Actually one reaction and one question:
They’ll be announcing the top 16 before all the games are played. Admittedly, most of the conferences playing the last weekend are not likely hosting.
Does anyone know whether ONE day makes a meaningful difference? I’ve never been involved in planning for an arena, so have no idea.

I don't get it either.
1) The extra day is a Sunday and many businesses are closed or reduced staff on Sundays.
2) Most teams should already know their status without needing the selection committee to tell them, so this will only help those universities on the "bubble" (13-16ish). Even then, I would still be preparing prior to that Saturday if there was a sliver of a hope that my team may be selected in the top 16.

Definitely head-scratching. According to the ESPN article, "The top 16 will be provided in alphabetical order". Hmmmmm....
I'm guessing the utility of notifying a day earlier would be so that host teams can start reaching out to local hotels to secure rooms for three yet-to-be-named teams that will be visiting for the first two rounds. Getting a day's jump those teams' fan base increases the likelihood of host teams being able to secure appropriate space in a single hotel for each respective visiting program.
I would imagine the logistics of finding enough rooms for players, coaches, support staff, cheerleaders, band, practice squad, players' parents, etc., could be quite daunting/frustrating.
