Stanley could have been so good but maligned by many for no reason.......and Ater was not a stiff as some would say here........

Can't believe I just watched the whole thing. But that was a joy. I loved Stanley, kid had some pizzazz out there. Would have loved for him to play with Shabazz, would have kept him tuned. One thing people don't remember about the blowout loss in the F4 to Michigan st. is that Stanley played like a man possessed in the second half and he almost single-handedly brought UConn back from a 20 point deficit, and even had the ball in his hands with the chance to cut it to a one possession lead late in the game. He played unreal in the F4 against a better Michigan St. team.

We could also certainly use Ater right now.

Gampel was crazy for that game--and that was only 3 years ago, which goes to show that the ban has really put a damper on things.

I'm scratching my head after that video. Stanley was an incredible athlete (Scott Burrell comes to mind) who looked like an NBA player. I've never been able to figure it out but there was just something missing and it kept him from being consistantly great. The talent was there but so was an unidenified demon. I hope all is well with him.

I always liked Dyson. I know a lot of people on this board don't. He was great that game.

The guards didn't fit on that team. If you replaced Kemba with AJ, or Dyson with Shabazz, that team would have done real damage. Sophomore Kemba played a little too similar to Senior Dyson for it to work.

I agree with the comments about the guards.

Man, that #15 kid really made plays in the second half.

I wonder what happened to him.

2 of the 3 loudest moments in Gampel's history in that game -- Beverly's dunk and Kemba's 25 footer.

Ray Allen's baseline dunk vs. Nova is the other.

How is that UConn team the one that layed such an egg vs. St.Johns in BET a short time later and lost in 2nd round of NIT....a baffling team to say the least. Love the guys just never got it together.

Yeah. It just didn't make sense. Some of the problems:
  • Both Kemba and Dyson weren't great outside shooters, and were slashers. Opposing teams were able to pack the paint. When Kemba or Dyson played alongside AJ, their skills were complimentary. Here, they were redundant.
  • Who was the leader? For the first half of the previous season, Stanley wasn't playing. When he wasn't playing, Dyson was clear #2 perimeter scorer, and the team was really really good. Then, Robinson came back and didn't play great. Dyson went down, Stanley exploded into our #2 perimeter scorer--and they went to the Final Four, and were close to winning. If Kemba didn't play so terribly (3-9 from the line! 1-5 from the field! 4 TOs to 2 AST!), they might have played UNC in the title game (and they would have had a shot, I think). Who leads, then? The charismatic sophomore PG? The returning SF who was playing best? Or the player coming back from injury who felt like, if only he were healthy, they'd be defending champs? This doesn't mean they didn't like each other...but you need a clear "guy," and all three of them had clear claims.
  • Gavin was a good PF, but a soft PF. And with Majok and AO rookies, we needed him to be stronger down low. And he wasn't.

They followed up that game with a Providence debacle, right? Let's hope the similarities end at one game because I have tickets to Nova this weekend.
