Think of Providence last January. The Friars came out and switched everything on the perimeter to stifle our offense and it worked very well. Kansas employed this same strategy on Friday. Somehow once again, we seemed surprised and unable to solve it. I believe our ineffectiveness was due to scheme rather than talent.
The strategy got the Jayhawks got off to a big (12 points) lead. The Huskies worked their butts off but they had to chase the game for 30 minutes and this surely took something out of them.
Eventually the Huskies got back in the game and took the lead with 10 minutes to go. At this point, holding the lead, Hurley went to the big two offense subbing in Johnson and keeping Clingan in the game. The result was our offense went cold and Kansas went on a game deciding 11-0 run. We did manage to get close after scrubbing the two big line up and even had a shot to steal the game.
This was not our best game. But Hurley and the players should been ready for the switching. And Danny probably should have reacted more quickly when the two bigs proved ineffective. Hopefully these lessons of the past have been relearned. I am and have been a big Hurley supporter but this was not his strongest game.
The Huskies played with great energy and Newton was spectacular. No question, the crowd had an impact. In the long run the loss should have any affect on the Huskies going forward and will still help our seeding come March.
