It is wonderful that The NYTimes, perhaps the most influential newspaper in the world, has significantly expanded its coverage of women's basketball- more specifically UConn women's basketball, assigning top sports reporter Harvey Araton to the job.
He began his column by pointing to one brief stretch of play in the semi-final vs. Maryland that he felt, and I wholeheartedly agree, represents exactly the greatness of UConn women's basketball

"... it came early in the second half of its national semifinal against Maryland on Sunday night.

Already trailing by 47-33, the Terrapins found a rare open shooter, guard Laurin Mincy, in the left corner. As Mincy set her feet and was about to launch from behind the 3-point line, the 6-foot-4 junior forward Breanna Stewart lunged with her long arms from what had seemed to be a safe distance away.

Stewart, recently named the Associated Press player of the year, deflected the shot. The freshman Kia Nurse caught the air ball, dribbled out of the pack and found a streaking Morgan Tuck filling the left lane. Tuck, a bruising 6-2 forward who missed last season with a knee injury, handled Nurse’s pass in stride, then made a gorgeous touch pass to Stewart, hustling back into the play, for a layup."

Love it! But please DO NOT refer to that beautiful #3 as a bruiser. She's our All-American bruiser.

Harvey - who has retired - has always been a fan of women's athletics. He's made a deliberate effort to "un-retire" to cover the game.

And the NYTimes sports reporters, as I've mentioned, have been in "Knicks losing hell" this year, and begged to cover other folks.... it's unusual to have a "real" reporter covering the games - and Viv and Tom have ...

Dead on. That is writing. Most articles these days are lazy and formulaic.

I do love the Boneyard. Only here can you get such diverse opinions of the same Author Harvey Araton. One in this post and a different one here. http://the-boneyard.com/threads/genos-win-win-thoughts-in-ny-times.75593/#post-1286728
Nope, today was Harvey at his more usual best. Yesterday wasn't. But through the years I've always thought Harvey was better when he's caught up in explaining the action of a game rather than doing the summaries of huge WCBB issues -- such as the UConn \ UTenn relationship or the nature of UConn's lowly home conference.

She's a beast. Moriah has spoken. It is known.

As Morgan introduced herself in the pre-game video clip - "the silent assassin."

I absolutely love that Stewie blocked the shot and then proceeded to beat everyone down the floor for the layup. That's incredible hustle by an incredible player.

Please stop using all caps in thread titles.

Now, now, guys... lets not let facts get in the way of a nice story

factually inaccurate... but otherwise well written... who could ask for anything more from a newspaper?

Maybe the writer was partially screened and couldn't see the the "2" on KML's jersey!

Yikes, I type way too slow...always get timed out.... rest of my thought....

I love that Stewie blocked Mincy's shot, but the best part was seeing her beat everyone back down the floor for the layup. And Kaleena's touch pass was so smart and unselfish! And watching every kid contribute in so many different ways- it's remarkable. Complete, all-around athletes who do all the things that make them great teammates and winners. Heck, that #23 kid is supposed to be a super scorer, so what does she do when she's stuck in a 1 for 8 shooting anomaly? She helps her team in other ways by dishing out 7 assists !!! Wow!

I am rarely surprised by what Stewie is able to do, but her stat line this game was so darn impressive:
25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 4 blocks. Double Wow!!

And don't forget, Stewie came from the opposite side of the court to make the block.

Hey, it's the thought that counts. All Huskies kind of look alike anyway, as I'm constantly getting Stokes and MoJeff mixed up.
If one of them wasn't a lot taller than the other, I would legitimately have an issue sometimes with Stokes and Williams.
