Geno has always stressed doing things the "right" way. There was an earlier thread about how the women are not allowed to use social media during the season, no nail polish, no headphones, covering tattoos, etc. He even mentioned winning the right way in the Olympics. I remember an interview where he said it was important not just to win, but to win the game the right way and to have respect for the game. I wasn't quite sure exactly what he meant, but I think I got the gist of the message.

I don't know much about Walz, he's a good coach and motivator, and kind of a wizenheimer like Geno, who doesn't seem to take himself to seriously. He was able to take Geno's joke about hiring him for his restaurant. I saw an interview with him and he was very engaging until he got to the part about not wearing a jacket. His AD said he didn't mind if Walz didn't wear a jacket, and Walz was happy because he hated wearing jackets. When I saw him in the semi-final, I thought the "Italian tablecloth" was inappropriate, and showed a lack of respect for the game and it didn't get any better in the final. Am I being a crabby old lady?

We've become a much more informal society. Where I work, every day is business casual. I think 1. Jeff prefers a casual look and 2. he likes checkered shirts. It's no big deal, IMO.

easttexastrash you read my mind! If a certain coach can dress like a $10 hooker I think Walz is okay.

Actually, that's just standard mid America 'dressing up'. Where she comes from, that's all style.

Your comment made me go look at something as sure enough he does have a remarkable resemblance to the CEO of Papa John doesn't he?

I believe she gets $15 for taking off the jacket. I'll check the services listing.
So did she get $12.50 for just the tease of almost ripping the jacket off?

Seriously, I love Kim. She is a hoot. A good coach, a straight shooter. And dares to wear clothes I would have never even considered wearing, even in my younger years.

Walz should always start in a coat, and tie..... anything less gives the game an AAU feel. I could care less what Jeff feels comfortable in. It is not about his comfort, it is about representing his University properly.

What is next, everyone wearing a warm-up suit like WVA mens coach Bob Huggins .

Personally, as long as the shirt fits and looks good, I could care less if a coach wears a suit or not. I don't recall it being mandatory that college coaches wear a suit on the sideline. Sure, it looks nice, but I don't think it in anyway detracts from the game or does not afford the sport the respect it deserves. The plays conducted between the lines is what matters.

Cultural clothing standards have changed everywhere. The number of people who show up for funerals and weddings in jeans and a T-shirt constantly astounds me. The percentage of people in a shirt and tie on Sundays let alone a sport coat or suit is maybe 50%. it is a casual world today. Like it or not.

The whole coaching staff was casual in the Virgin Islands, too. Even the fashionista CD wore capris and a polo shirt.

Its a "look". Certain coaches have it in varying ways.

Hatchell is consistent in her shoulder pads, though she no longer looks quite as military as she used to. The assistant at Duke (Al Brown) wears bright colored sweaters. Naya Butts here in AZ wears a black suit jacket, black pants, and sneakers, usually with a white blouse. Etc.

Seems to me actions speak louder than clothes, and Jeff's actions have brought a lot of honor and respect to his University.

And, methinks the world is a little better for his tablecloth adventure....
