Well, the result was incredibly impressive. I thought that would be a tough matchup which, if everything broke our way, maybe we could steal. I did not expect that we would simply dominate them for the bulk of the game and win fairly easily. On offense, we produced. And produced. And produced. Interestingly, we did it with less total yardage than we've been getting but we finished EVERY DRIVE inside the 20 with 6, not 3. And what a difference that made. Specials played fine (but for the Vitale muffed punt which Mariner luckily bailed him out of). And the D was simply great. Pitched a shutout until we had opened up a 3 score lead. And the result was, maybe, our best win of the Diaco era (on paper last year against UCF was better, but that strikes me as largely a fluke where the weather caused them to give up for half a game). But yet, it was far from a perfect night. Two turnovers, each of which was in the head rather than the body. Shirreffs looked at the target way too long on the pick 6 and Myers was inexplicably stretching the ball out to get a first down long after he had it. Not to mention Vitale, who you can let off the hook for muffing the original punt but less so for trying to scoop up and run with the ball the second time. We didn't run the clock down between plays when they cut the lead to 12 in the 4th quarter, but no one cares about the mistake because we got into the end zone. And the size of the crowd sucked. Yes, it doesn't change the fact that attendance for the year is better than we feared, and I know it was a cold, Halloween weekend night after we lost 5 of 6, but still disappointing. But it was a really good win, and just as importantly a good win where I still don't think we reached our maximum potential yet. Maybe, just maybe, the game where we do everything we can is still coming this year. And, if it's against Houston or Temple, maybe, just maybe ....

So offense, credit the coaches for a lot. We didn't struggle to get plays off on time, we found a creative way to use Rutherford (I couldn't figure out in the stadium why they had moved John Green back to offense) and there were other nice touches (like putting Marriner in at FB and using him on a quick hitter). But, of course, if the players didn't get things done the coaches don't look like they've accomplished anything. Very, very, conservative and quiet game from Shirreffs. Hopefully he can get through Tulane also being quiet and then benefits from a week off. Arkeel, obviously, was great. And as great as the 90 yard run was, the fact that he carried it 25 times and the way he ran inside was more impressive. Also, fairly obviously, it was the OL's best game of the year. Probably by a lot. If they can sustain at that level -- a big if -- and if it really was improvement and not just poor effort by ECU -- again, we can be better by the end of this year than I would have expected. I am not in love with the amount of play Hergy Mayala has been getting, but credit to the young man -- after getting hit in the head with a crossing patter, that catch he made setting up the ejection and our first TD was probably the play of the game (yes, I remember Arkeel's run but we were already up 11 at that point). Bottom line -- we got plays off easily and were able to run the ball. If Shirreffs can use the off week to get back to where he was, maybe we have one offensive Big XII like explosion in us. It won't be against Temple -- they play D too well. But against Houston?

On defense, I didn't think the schemes were very different than what we've been seeing. But against an offense that didn't execute as well, keeping everything in front of you worked great. We shut down both total yards and points. We got a little more pressure on them, but I'm guessing that had more to do with their OL being banged up than us. Obi was great. Maybe his best game as a Husky (and certainly showed the athleticism that 3 head coaches have raved about not that he seemed to be in the right place all the time). Summers was great. Our corners next year are going to be a great weapon and may be a big part in helping us overcome the loss of 5 defensive starters. I thought it was Vann's best game of the year, and maybe the best game of the year for our LBs as a group. And we really, really benefitted from Adeyami being back. THere is a player I never thought would be an important player when he came to us or when he started on the field, but he's now become a really, really good player for us (and may be the hardest to replace of the defensive starters we're losing). Great total team effort on this side of the ball.

On specials, how were we worried about Bobby Puyol earlier in the year? And how did Tarbutt start the year taking kickoffs. Everything else was fine, but while I like Nick Vitales aggressiveness and desire to both get to punts and if possible return them, he can be dialed back a bit. Just a bit. Before it bites us.

So we're not 4-5, 2-3 in league, with a winnable game in New Orleans off an extra day of rest (I would expect us to be roughly 5-7 point favorites) and then, finally and mecifully, an off week that we can use. I am going to refuse to talk about the last two weeks until the off week. We will have plenty of time to talk about that after Tulane. The bottom line is that we need to take care of business on the road against a team we are better than, but that beat us last year. And we need to see if we have a gear above even Friday night, where good OL play and D is paired with our QB looking like he did against USF (silly criticism of that game aside) and mistake free football. I think we just might. And we are way, way, WAY ahead of where I hoped to be three quarters of the way through this season with a team that starts only ONE senior on offense. This has already been a very successful year, but I want more. Starting with a win Saturday, and including a bounce back effort by our fanbase against Houston.

Biz - spot on. Thanks.
As you pointed out, the O line was the best they've been for not only this year but also last year and probably the year before that!

Slightly contrary to the View, I felt they brought linebackers MUCH more vs prior games.

Final question for the BY. Is RonJon OK? It looked like he severely hurt his ankle but haven't seen anything.

For everything we did right, it shouldn't be underestimated how big that Marriner recovery of Vitale's muffed punt was. Next play was Arkeel's 90 yard run, so there's a potential 14 or 15-point swing.

This was one of those games we all had marked this year as a game that could potentially break our way, and it didn't disappoint. Loved the effort and the enthusiasm by the players all night.

On defense, I didn't think the schemes were very different than what we've been seeing.
I was hoping someone would bring this up. Maybe a function of the matchup or maybe it was ECU playing the wrong QB for most of the game, but either we weren't giving them that 15-20 yard window between lb and safeties or they couldn't find it. Corner play was great.

Nice job as always Biz. I'm happy you were able to witness the evidence and can now freely admit that we do indeed have "talented players". :) What was different on Friday were the coaching corrections. I disagree with your observation that the defensive schemes weren't very different. The defensive backfield actually played up and closer than before and were man to man on lots of throws. Plus the linebackers were more active and aggressive, rather than mere area protectors. It's not just my eyes that saw the change. Players told me that after the game. "Lots of coaching adjustments were made." Here's my advice for our offense. Our passes ought to be more to the right. Andreas is a much better pass blocker than run blocker. And (notwithstanding Arkeel's long TD) our runs should be more to the left. Levy is a much better run blocker than pass blocker.
Our coaches in past games thwarted our red zone opportunities. On Friday getting plays in and the actual calls were very different. If we can replicate those aspects, watch out world!
As for specials, I agree that Puyol took the early misses to heart and corrected the problems. Interestingly, for all the improvements in our coaching on Friday, the missing piece was not recognizing that ECU's punter Worth Gregory was their best player--that's right-- and a sure shot NFL punter. 5 star punter, Ray Guy finalist, runs fast and squats 320 lbs. And oh yes, he has a rocket foot. So with all that info, we still had Vitale standing too far forward for every punt. Gregory completely flipped the field on his punts and ECU almost had two turnovers. That's a coaching lapse. But I'm confident that, just like our players, our coaches are getting better too.
So get ready for the final few games. Let's shock the league!

You're right about Tulane. Focus on the next game and the next game only. I am guilty for talking about Houston and what kind of crowd we should expect if/when they beat Tulane. I'm going to stop until after Saturday. Tulane hung with Memphis a lot longer than I thought they would/could and if our guys aren't ready to play, we can and will lose.

Aside: can you call a game against Tulane a 'trap game' if our record is 4-5? I don't think we've gotten quite there yet, since that assumes that one team is far superior to the other on paper and we have quite a ways to go to proclaim that. The bye week couldn't be coming at a better time. Hopefully our guys will see that and put EVERYTHING into this Saturday, knowing they have extra time to recover.

Two quibbles. It was not cold Friday night (Football Night Game Division). Any talk of a successful season should also wait until after Saturday.

I thought the spot where we showed the most growth was when ECU made it 24-13 and we came back with a 5 minute drive and scored a TD. That is the first time we have done that in a long time and it felt good to execute when we needed to.

Very good insights BL.

I thought Vann was primed for a huge season - the injury must have been holding him back.

Great point on KA. He is a huge piece for them.

Since I was the one that was harping on Shirreffs acuracy, I will say this, the TD pass to Bloom and the pass over the middle to Mayala were big time throws. Especially the Mayala one. I don't know if he will ever be a consistently accurate passer, and I still maintain that some of the hits he took earlier while scrambling are affecting him with accuracy. He also threw a swing pass to Arkeel that he caught in full stride. He is also tough as nails.

I think @Whaler asked who are the all conference level players. One answer may be Foley Fatukasi, he was abusing their OL and drawing double teams. I've liked Jhavon Williams for a while, but Summers has 5 picks on the year. The of them together, while may be not as good a duo as Gratz and Blidi, or Branch and Butler, are still pretty formidable. I sure as hell hope we can win on the road and give ourselves two chances at a bowl game even if it is against superior teams.

The 45 yd FG by Puyol split the uprights with plenty of leg to spare. He has looked so good, every effort should be made to get Tarbutt his redshirt year barring injuries.

Good call on Marriner! I think Coach Diaco's positivity, and his willingness to rotate subs in more frequently than lots of coaches, even when they have made mistakes, showed up in Marriner's hustle play there. When your 2's/3's feel that they are VALUED and given a CHANCE, they will give you more.

As for punt returns, why can't we put 2 or 3 guys back to fair catch? We absolutely never rush the punt and play a safe defense 99% of the time. There should be no reason for any punt to hit the ground or even for one guy to run 20 yards to the sidelines to make a tough catch. Punt returns have become such a mental issue for our team - like Chuck Knoblauch throwing to the 1st base.

Don't remember seeing Ormsby, Is he hurt? No more Clax? Didn't realize that Knappe is seldom in a 3-point stance except when getting near the goal line. Saw a 3-man rush with Stapleton and Cazzerola as ends. Stapleton had bunch of snaps and a good game. Double teaming on two defenders were the only times the OLine looked bad.
The guys next to us initially thought Anderson ate is way on to the OLine.

I have to watch the replay on TV to be sure, but I also thought the CB's played a little tighter and they definitely rushed 5 guys much more often. Hallelujah.

I believe if you have 3 guys playing back to catch a punt, that leaves a fake punt easy to convert.

I'd like to know why we fair catch inside the 10. Just let it bounce!

Vann looks like he is back to 2014 form. Our DE's were much more active/disruptive. I'm in the camp that Shirreffs just needs a bye week to heal up. Despite a couple of drops he still hit 57% with 8.8 YPA. I feel really good about the team after this win, can't wait for Tulane.

We were talking about that during the game - it seems much more common across the nation now. I am guessing that the risk of getting stuck inside the five and having to QB sneak multiple times, forfeit a drive and give up excellent field position lead to the change in coaching strategy.

Nice job on the recap. I never understood throwing Puyol under the bus so quickly and was worried the coaches might damage his confidence. Fortunately he had enough confidence for all involved. And yes it was clear the coaches made some welcome changes on D, and are still trying new angles to WIN games on both sides of the ball. That is greatly encouraging. Get the next W and we can start dreaming of kicking that football before Lucy realizes we're coming.

I like your posts for a lot of reasons, most of all because you sit in a different section than I do and see different things. Literally speaking, your “View” is valued.

I agree with just about everything you’ve written, particularly the efficiency with which the offense operated. This is a team that beat Virginia Tech, throttled SMU, and gave two very strong programs (Florida and Temple) all they could handle. Yet we dispatched them, completely, with an ease not seen at home maybe since Virginia in 2008.

This was easily Diaco’s best - the UCF game was not only the weather but also Jazz’s memorial, Homecoming and also the weather, the weather and the weather. Oh, and we stunk.

I actually like the amount of playing time players like Mayala and McLean are getting. It’s further evidence that our skill positions are talented and young, very young. It seems that their growth (Mayala’s in particular) is at the expense of Beals (whom I love), but as a whole the unit is looks really, really strong.

On specials, I’d like to see Marriner returning kicks. Unless the guy simply can’t catch kicked balls, he’s got a ton of speed and I’d like to see what he can do — and also cut back on the risk of injury to Arkeel. Puyol looks like the kid we recruited, too.

The big takeaway for me is that all three units showed that USF and Cincinnati were exceptions, not rules. These kids are apparently as locked-in as Diaco insists. The players are growing and learning from their mistakes and their successes, and aside from a drop-off in Shirreffs’s accuracy, they’re getting better and better on a linear basis from week to week.

There are three things that will make this season an objective success in my book, and proof that UConn football is back. The first is a win at Tulane, and the second is taking Houston or Temple (or both) to the wire. On paper, a 5-7 is very Pasqualonish, but 5 wins against this schedule and a chance to beat either of those teams (or even earn a win in one?) would slam the door on that long national nightmare forever.

The third? Seeing about 34,999 of my closest friends join me for football in three weeks. I would buy the World Series and Halloween as excuses for the ECU attendance but it was the Mets and Royals, and Halloween was Saturday. (We did a better job drawing for West Virginia when the Sox and Yanks played in the ALCS, with Pedro pitching, on the night of a Bush-Kerry debate in 2004, at least until Pat White did what Pat White always did.) If we want to be taken seriously as a program, a game versus an undefeated program with a chance to earn a bowl berth in our home finale should bring out a very strong crowd.

If it doesn't? Enjoy the AAC, Connecticut fans. You’ve earned it.

Please three quarters of the P5 wouldn't have any better attendance than UConn if they were in the AAC.

4/5ths wouldn't when they were 5 years removed from a bowl game and had lost 5 of 6.

No question. The game we're playing doesn't have fair rules, however.

No kidding but attendance against East Carolina and Houston isn't the criteria for entry.

No, but unfortunately, winning 2 national championships every 3 years in hoops, making a BCS bowl and having a winning record against Pitt/Syracuse/Rutgers/Louisville/Notre Dame combined aren't criteria for entry, either.
