Going into the final drive where the angst seems to have developed:   UConn has gone 0-5 passing; had 2; 3 & outs built off the pass; gaining the only 26 yards of the quarter (and the lone first down) on the ground.   At that point the play balance is 5 passes and 6 runs.  Ironically had they burned more than 2:05 combined on the first two drives of the quarter they may have successfully run the clock out and secured the win.

Syracuse has already gained 159 yards in the quarter, scoring once, missing a makable field goal and throwing a pick after getting a chunk play.

To that point the only “stops” UConn had were Syracuse mistakes (missed kick and a pick). It’s not hard to see a world where the coaching staff says… we can’t complete passes (the protection was struggling) and we can’t stop them, time to chew clock, particularly when to that point it’s the only way you’ve extended drives in the quarter.
