O.K., that was easy. And fun. Nice night for a football game, dry and warm enough. Early season night game always means filet, baked stuffed potato and red wine, so that was good. One note about parking — I pulled in 2 hours early, there was shockingly little traffic around the stadium and yet couldn’t park in blue anywhere near the stadium? Why? Because apparently no one is parking the people who come in really early, and the main blue lot only had one row of cars near the stadium instead of fitting two cars back to front between the paths. Sheesh. Crowd disappointing. Great showing by students, although they bailed really early, and the sections where the parents sit. Otherwise, very sparse. Hard to believe we will be attractive to the 12 or ACC until more paying customers are showing up, but unclear how high attendance can go just by being better until we’re playing a big time conference schedule again.

O.K., as to the game itself, wow. I think it’s possible that FAU may not have been as good as folks thought based on playing Michigan State tough (their win over FIU is far less impressive now that FIU lost to Monmouth) but that was unbelievably dominant. The defense played pretty much perfectly until the game was clearly over at 27-0 midway through the third quarter. At that point, had given up less than 100 yards of total offense and IIRC about 10 passing. I can’t even single folks out when a unit plays as perfectly as the D did through that part of the game, although Brown (who gets beat up a lot it seems) and McDonald made play after play. McDonald was a great pick up by the way. Give me a lower level FBS player who has already performed at a high level as opposed to a bench warmer P-4 player every time. And the push by the D Line was fantastic.

On offense, the performance of the OL was just beyond comprehension. Unbelievable performance. Mel Brown was very good, but Robinson was just fantastic. And only a freshman. I assume Cam Edwards was banged up because he barely played, even before we had taken over the game completely. Evers did a very solid job running the ball, and looked more comfortable passing it. We put the passing game away when it was clear we didn’t need to pass, but I don’t read anything negative about not throwing when we don’t need to. Ever’s percentage would have been great except he had two very easy catches dropped on him. The catch Bell made coming back to the ball while double teamed was unbelievable, and Porter’s TD grab late wasn’t much less of an effort.

Has there ever been a game where our punter never took the field? Good bounce back game for Freeman. Return games are much less important than they were when we were in the Big East, but we were fine in all aspects.

So some questions were answered last night. Not with the passing game (although we certainly took a step forward). We now have a home game against Buffalo, who is coming off a road upset of a ranked NIU team. But we’ve played beyond great at home, and the game is at the Rent. This is a huge game for us, both to make sure we get bowl eligible and to have a good season and not just a mediocre one. But a good season seems possible with the next 5 games at home. I’m optimistic. Let’s hope that enough folks are optimistic that we actually get someone besides students and parents to show up. And the school should consider finding more seats for students and getting them there.

Great summary. As for the attendance, can UConn do something to keep folks there longer? Maybe some kind of prizes at the end of the game? Free fries at a local fast food joint? Free t-shirt? People love prizes.

On the list of things needing fixing or improving, finding ways to keep fans in the seats instead of leaving because UConn is just annihilating the opponents, is a low priority.

This. If the price for being so dominant at home is that the stadium empties out as the 4th quarter winds down, I will have no trouble living with that.

I never thought I would be so pumped about a game against.... Buffalo. But here we are.

Decisions like this will make us or break us in the recruiting wars. QB that fits that description going to be hard to land I think.

I am not in Connecticut and I don't know what is happening there, but is there aggressive marketing of the football team now? Billboards, radio and TV spots may be helpful. And as West Coast Husky posted, give out some free stuff!

Great game last night. I'm not complaining but it is really tough to go to 6 home games in a row so you have to pick and choose. Again, not complaining, but this was a night game against a not exciting opponent. I would expect the next 3 games to be much better attended with 2 noon and one 3:30 start against recognizable opponents. The last 2 home games' attendance will be dependent on how UConn does in these next 3 games.

I might be in the minority but I prefer night games. Much better atmosphere.

Night game against a top opponent, yes. But when you drive 2 hours to the game….
True - I’m spoiled in that regard as I live 10 minutes from the rent. Drive back must be brutal.

And that’s what it’s all about. It’s where we are and probably will be, to be honest, but having games that mean something to the fan base is a good thing. It’s been a while.

This game becomes easy to sell to a hesitant fanbase as almost every UConn fan is aware of Buffalo geographically. Also, playing the Buffalo just beat a Top 25 NIU team who had just beaten NDU is an easy mental connection.

Compare that to trying to explain we are playing Tulane, who just beat North Texas, who beat TCU type scenario.
Or, UConn beat FAU who gave Mich St. a tough game.

I'll give the basketball people the nod and say that I think regional games will always cause more interest. That's what all these "national sports brands" don't quite figure. Long term versus short term

I was wondering about that. I prefer night games also…but does the fanbase prefer day games?
There is about 15,000. hard core fans that show up every game. The Noon time games get more causal fans then the 7:00 p.m. games. Our section was active and loud last night but I would have liked to see another 5 to 10 thousand in the Rent last night.

Attendance issue. Connecticut a bad football state. Just not enough of the general public cares. Yesterday went to the Yale at Holy Cross game before UConn. 15k in a game played in an all day rain + cold wind. Mich ST at BC 44k. Central CT at UMass 11k.
Total that out equals 70k.

Don’t worry about attendance. The Northeast likes a winner and a name brand schedule. I don’t care what anyone says, this area is just too densely populated with teams for people to clamor to see a losing team beat a lower level Florida directional. If we play good football and play known programs, we will go right back to the old days.

Because apparently no one is parking the people who come in really early, and the main blue lot only had one row of cars near the stadium instead of fitting two cars back to front between the paths. This is spot on. I'm good with the 'park wherever you want' for the first hour (or two). However, once those hours end, start filling in the spots not taken starting with the front row and working to the back of the lot. That would mean no setting up tents/cornhole/grill/chairs in a manner that would totally block the gravel path until the rows on either side are filled. Minor inconvenience IMO.

Understood this protocol means that "late" arrivals can't park next to their friends But I'd be good with putting up with that relatively minor inconvenience rather than having a significant number of unused spots up in the front go unused as is the case now -- or having latecomers navigate through a bunch of kids and soon-to-be-drunks with no guidance or in some cases resistance from the LAZ team.

The other option is to go the numbered reserved space route, as is done at Maryland. (my idea is a long, low-hanging chain in the middle of the grass the width of the gravel roads with little numbered plates (think bicycle license plate size) denoting the spot). Of course, that opens the pandoras box of who gets the best spots, arranging to get groups together, with donor points probably the decider.

Finally, it's amazing that we're 21 years in and the choke point between 10A, 8, and 7 for those turning left into 7 or 8 has not been fixed. Gotta be a better way than how it's being done. rentpark.jpg

Was at Costco in Waterbury on Thursday. There was a kiosk that was selling pairs of UCONN single game football tickets in the upper deck for $ 49.95...

No one is staying for an easy beatdown of a non regional opponent. I was at parent's weekend at Ole Miss yesterday for a game against Ga. Southern. P.T. Barnum couldn't have orchestrated a more entertaining event. The sell out crowd left at half time.
