It is also the ND, SC, Baylor, Stanford, etc advantage—past success gets you the top recruits. So how does a team even approach a UConn? Coaches like Geno help. Colorado won a national championship in football with inferior facilities because coach McCartney could walk into a black household and show the parents he would take care of their kid. It took Geno 10 years to reach the heights. First, you need to get your state—or nearby—high school stars to stay home (Rebecca Lobo). Colorado lost its state’s top player to Stanford and probably loses the state’s latest big time recruit as well. The key might be going overseas. Colorado WBB, picked to finish last in PAC-12, is 9-0, thanks to players from Australia, New Zealand, and—wait for it—Poland (though, unlike Ania, she played some high school ball in the States). It’s a tough row but possible because you need only put five players on the floor. Make two of them All Americans, as Geno says, and you have a good shot at a NC.
