It is also the ND, SC, Baylor, Stanford, etc advantage—past success gets you the top recruits. So how does a team even approach a UConn? Coaches like Geno help. Colorado won a national championship in football with inferior facilities because coach McCartney could walk into a black household and show the parents he would take care of their kid. It took Geno 10 years to reach the heights. First, you need to get your state—or nearby—high school stars to stay home (Rebecca Lobo). Colorado lost its state’s top player to Stanford and probably loses the state’s latest big time recruit as well. The key might be going overseas. Colorado WBB, picked to finish last in PAC-12, is 9-0, thanks to players from Australia, New Zealand, and—wait for it—Poland (though, unlike Ania, she played some high school ball in the States). It’s a tough row but possible because you need only put five players on the floor. Make two of them All Americans, as Geno says, and you have a good shot at a NC.

Nick Saban on college football vs. the NFL:

"In the NFL the worst team gets the top draft pick. In college the best team gets the top TEN recruits."

And how many top recruits , of any sport, may be forced to select the losers? It is what it is. If the kids entering the pro draft had any options they would likely select the top 10 teams and eventually do get there. Proof of even Nature can't re-engineer the survival of the fittest.

You missed a signficiant step in the sequence To become a top recruiting College team. Get national TV, lots of TV, exposure in many regions. Taking on and being allowed to take on Tenn (love it or hate it) put Uconn's brand in the face of many kids, parents, High Schools. It didn't hurt that the coach of that team looked 10 years younger than his age and projected a handsome personable image to the world. Winning against the then top WCBB team and the 2,3,4, 5, 10 worked wonders. Visibility in advertising is important and Geno/Uconn, Christine, a pristine looking team, no tats, clean cut looking--hard playing ---added to the view.
The TV audience saw their daughters or grandaughters should go to with them. Geno with Christines strong hand SOLD A PRODUCT---UCONN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM And the rest is history.

One way to join the top ranks is to get good kids with talent and coach them up game by game. That's the foundation. Then get better players. OR, you can have Rebecca Lobo, Jen Rizzotti, and Pam Webber fall in your lap.

Yup. Hence the failure of communism as an economic system.

And Precious, and all the blue collar warriors, Barbara Turner, et al playing out of their minds to validate the "brand."
