The recent trend has been down, but the down trend has been broken this year.

2002: 78
2003: 53
2004: 48
2005: 68
2006: 73
2007: 39
2008: 40
2009: 28
2010: 56 (Fiesta Bowl)
2011: 76 (PP/GDL takes over)
2012: 89
2013: 121 (PP/GDL fired, Weist interim HC)
2014: 184 (Diaco takes over)
2015: 93

The analysis shows how far the football program fell under PP/GDL. 2011, 2012, and 2013 were the worst rankings since the year before The Rent opened in 2003 and each year was worse than the year before. 2014 was much worse than it probably should have been, but Diaco chose to rebuild almost from scratch and lay a strong foundation for the future.

That team was really good.

The problem with the '09 team was their inability to hold late leads. Of our 5 losses, we were up in the 4th quarter at Pitt, at home to UNC, at WVU and at home to Rutgers. Yes, we had late wins also (at ND and home in the sleet to USF), but that team was literally 4 defensive plays from going 11-1. Oh well. Obviously, the on field record is not what that team will be remembered for.

It's hard to win regularly, when at the end of the game, the defense is on the field. Much greater chance to win lots of game, if your offense is on the field at the end regulary - and its really easy to win, when your offense can kneel on the ball to run the clock out and win, like we did to South Carolina in Birmingham following that season.

It's amazing that it's only been 5 full seasons in the books since that win against South Carolina. Only 4 full seasons since matching up with Oklahoma in the Fiesta - and losing by 4 TDs.

Several coaching changes, and one full recruiting cycle from there - and we're 4-5, with 3 games to play 2015.

I hope we win in New Orleans this week, and Diaco gets a second chance this season to take the team through a bye week renewal of training camp, and a week of practice to get this team to the plus side of .500.

Only one game at a time though. I hope they get it done this week.

I believe the 5 losses were by a combined 17 points or so as well.
