The one who stayed: Fifth-year senior Matt Peart irreplaceable as UConn team leader
>>Others in Matt Peart’s position probably would have left.
Peart, a three-year starter on UConn’s offensive line, finished last season with one year of football eligibility remaining and, almost certainly, the chance to leave Storrs for a higher profile program. Had he chosen, he could have entered his name into college football’s transfer portal, then fielded offers from coaches intrigued by his size (6-foot-5, 300 pounds), his durability and his leadership.
Instead, he stuck around, with barely a second thought.
“I decided to stay because UConn was the major D-I program that took a shot on me,” Peart said Tuesday at AAC media day. “I want to pay dividends back to UConn. They took a shot at me, so I’m going to do everything I can for them.”<<
