In the July 2 issue of SI, there's a good article about "The Greatest Game Nobody Ever Saw," by Jack McCallum. It was an intense scrimmage by "The Dream Team" in Monaco in 1992, just before the 1992 Olympics.

Magic's Blue team vs. Jordan's White team as they and studs named Barkley, Malone, Bird, Ewing, Pippen, Robinson and Mullin took an intermission from golf and gambling to do battle and trash-talk with the door locked, Coach Chuck Daly looking on, and an overmatched Italian referee making occasional calls, all disputed by the contestants.

[I interrupt this narrative to excerpt a quote from the article, just to make the day of our beloved mod, Husky Nan: "Years later Jordan will tell me, coldly and matter-of-factly, 'Anybody who had Laettner on the team lost. He was the weak link, and everybody went at him.'"]

Suffice it to say, it was one helluva scrimmage and it was fortunately (for McCallum, author of the book, "Dream Team") recorded by a lone TV cameraman in the otherwise empty stands.

It got me to thinking about the possibility of another such pre-Olympics scrimmage between two teams comprised of the greatest assemblage of talent ever, the US Women's Olympic BB Team, circa 2012.

In the interest of simplicity, mischievousness, or sadism, would Geno actually pit the UConn alumnae against those who played elsewhere? Tina to tip-off against Big Syl? Bird vs. Whalen at PG? Simone and Swin? Asjha and Angel? Diana and Candace and Maya and Catchings all going at one another?

I fantasize that it would happen. I wish I could see it. I'll let others speculate about how it would play out. Don't everybody talk at once.

Or against the crop of current college all-stars? While I think Griner could obviously play against them, I am thinking Skylar would have a tough time.

Although Skylar might have a tough time defending Diana, she would have no problem at all scoring at will against Diana and Sue.

I would rather see the UCONN players pitted on teams against each other and let them fight it out for UCONN supremecy. My money would be on whichever team DT is on.

As Geno said about the possibility of Maya playing Diana one-on-one (paraphrased), Maya would do things that Diana couldn't stop, but Dee would find a way to win [even if it meant cheating]. :D

DT has the killer instinct. One of, if not the greatest, competitors I've ever seen.
