Weird.

The CUSA AND the WAC have the ability - through NCAA bylaws - to pull FCS programs up to FBS with invites. Turns out: the NCAA certifies FBS leagues. CUSA AND the WAC qualify - and the WAC obviously has not been there for a half dozen years (or more). But that is kinda a grandfather think. Both of those organizations have something valuable. The WAC can create 6 Universities into the alignment to play FCS Football (or other Olympic sports) and then RAISE them to FBS in a few years; after each has gone through the required 4 year transition period. Both Sam Houston, Tarleton, SF Austin are now in Year 2 - somehow.

CUSA can do this as well. BECAUSE they are a certified FBS Conference with all rights granted.

As we note that they might just dry up and die - again it has been reported that they are getting as much as $36 m in Exit Fees (I cannot figure out the math - it is supposed to be around $3m a school ... but whatever). Then the four new programs can be charged $2m for entry. Over $40m.

So ... what if the CUSA (or WAC - maybe a different name) OFFERS our regional FCS a one time chance to rise to FBS - as a northeastern wing? Maybe at $5m a pop. You could instantly have a 6-8 team Conference eastern branch (and gain another big pool of money). Don't ask me what the ASUN is doing - because they are talking about going FCS to FBS too and they do not fall under this NCAA prior certification. Just petitioning? You might think UNH or Maine? Or Delaware? O ... they like the Playoffs and the level of play; while the landscape of the division in the southeast and Texas erodes. Really? Watch James Madison from here. The rise will be quick and the money (see Coastal) will be lucrative. Big Sky? I teach at UAlbany (and therefore know the interior thought process of Buffalo football and then Stony Brook).. Stony Brook + Albany + Towson are not the same mindset as UNH or Delaware. There's shaky ground.

Collateral Damage: Athletes Take Brunt of the Blow in JMU-CAA Feud

"JMU’s impending move led to CAA membership invoking a two-decade-old bylaw that banned the Dukes from championship competition. The only teams able to compete are football (where the CAA teams operate outside of league purview) and two whose championships are this week, field hockey and women’s soccer.

Everyone else at the best all-sports school in the conference is out, effective immediately. Men’s soccer, scheduled to host the league tournament next week, is out. Women’s volleyball, tied for the league lead at the moment, is out. Men’s and women’s basketball, which cannot reach the dream of an NCAA Tournament berth without the automatic bids that come with winning the conference tourney, are out. Women’s swimming, shooting for an unprecedented fivepeat as league champ, is out. Three other league championships scheduled to be hosted at the school in Harrisonburg, Va., are out. And so on."
