2. Connecticut: Sometimes miserable fan bases are justified in their misery, and there's no disputing UConn belongs in that category. Three years ago, they're playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Now they're getting left out of the Atlantic Coast Conference and losing to Towson in front of mediocre crowds at a stadium 40 minutes from campus. Oh, and they're being coached by Paul Pasqualoni, whose last winning season was at Syracuse in 2001. But here's the good news, UConn fans: A loss to your old coach Randy Edsall and Maryland on Sept. 14 and you've got a real chance to move up to No. 1.

When I saw that we were #2 (which all things considered is quite appropriate) I was convinced that USF had to be the once school ahead of us.

I've known for years how UGA fans feel about Richt and I will say this; if once December rolls around we can P and replace him with the very recently fired Richt, I will be thrilled. He'll dominate a conference such as the American in no time.

Seems like the only problem with Richt is that he can't win the big games, but we don't play any of those so he certainly could excel at UConn.

He has a lifetime .750 record as a head coach (with the SEC compromising 2/3 of his schedule) and has won 2/3 of his bowl games. No, he can't coach as well as Saban and he doesn't bring in the ridiculous amount of talent that Miles does (although he has always brought in a ton of talent). That school has claimed five national titles but only one (1980) was official. They were never Bama's equal but their fan base always believed they were.

That he hasn't won a national title there (which is his one shortcoming as their HC) is the only thing they can gripe about but the reality is that it merely makes him no worse than equal to all but one other HC that the school has ever had.

Can't imagine he'd be available even if he gets fired.

Can I at least have this fantasy until Labor day is over?

It boggles the mind that South Florida isn't at least number 2.

We're miserable right now, but we know Pasqualoni is not the coach next year.

USF just got a new coach. Now that's miserable.

Year 1 coaches are allowed bad losses. Year 3 coaches, not so much.

I don't know how we aren't #1. 99% of our fanbase wanted Pasqualoni fired after last season. Then we watch Cincinnati hire Tommy Tuberville, showing that it is possible to make a GREAT ambitious coaching hire in this mid-major conference with a small stadium. Then George DeLeone is retained. Then we get an entire offseason of conference realignment where the likes of DePaul, Providence, Seton Hall, and Marquette found more stable homes for their athletic programs than what we have. Then Towson happened and everyone is going through the motions: "ho hum, we just have to execute better...blah blah blah". Our next game is against our old coach who brought this program to the brink of continued relevancy and left because he felt it couldn't grow any further (under the context of our old AD Hathaway, I don't blame him). We will surely lose this game and what would have been a great opportunity for UCONN fans to taste a little bit of sweet revenge against Randy for the abrupt and shady way he left, we will instead silently think to ourselves "damn, I wish he was still our coach" when his team leaves our field with a fairly easy W. After that, we get to be blown out by Michigan in front of 25,000-30,000 Michigan fans after UCONN fans dump their tickets because of the 0-2 start. Then comes a bunch of more losses and thousands of more fans disguised as concrete and bleacher seats so that by the time we take the field against Memphis in the Battle for Second to Last Place, the stadium will look like the spring game attendance. And all of this happens in the most critical year of UCONN football considering our current position of being on the outside looking in on the power conferences.

Georgia? They are in the SEC and constantly in the Top 25. They lost to the #8 ranked team on the road by a FG. Sure it stinks that they lost their WR celebrating a TD. And it stinks that they can't win a National Championship but there can only be one Nick Saban.
