No. The AAC sold the history—literally all of it—to the Big East. So while there are reasons to say the Big East became the American, it's the Big East who has records that go back before 2013.

But he did agree to sell the history. The records, everything. The current Big East is the owner of all of that. Otherwise your argument is that the American can take credit for Villanova's 1986 title. They can't, because the American gave everything to the Big East.

For all intents and purposes, the Big East continued without a number of members, and the American agreed to be a new conference just headquartered in the same place with the same commissioner.
