Another manifestation of it:

"The Hall of Famer got choked up and fought back tears a few times on stage.

"I can't describe it. I don't know why, it happened," Auriemma said of being overcome by emotion. "It's been really different from the time the NCAA Tournament started. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Yesterday, maybe Thursday, there was this article about several things - the tough one in the family, etc. - which related how Geno's shyness translated into moving the home bench cross court so he didn't have to walk across the court and have everyone watching him. He is a complex guy no?

But he feels a tremendous responsibility for his players and cares so much that they all go out the right way. Today I saw an article in which Kalana Greene said as a recruit she thought he was pretty arrogant and later she thought he was one of the humblest people she knew, and she wished more people could see him like she does. (did not share because aware how much a pest I've been).

We know some of his players have admitted to his surrogacy as a father figure. To a woman they have a strong bond with him and the program. Thirty plus years.

No matter where it goes in the next three days or next year, we are very lucky sports fans to have run into Geno.

Okay:

"WNBA guard Kalana Greene had a somewhat negative view of Auriemma while she was a Timberland High School player, but thought differently as a UConn starter.

“I think his confidence comes across as arrogant,” Greene said. “When I met him in recruiting I told him just that. I said, ‘Hey, I thought you were arrogant and cocky.’ He said, ‘Why did you think that?’ It’s because of the way he’s portrayed in the media. But he’s really just very sure of himself and as I have gotten to know him, I see him as one of the most humble people I have ever met. I wish people could see that.”

Rocky, I mostly enjoy your pestilence. I hope going forward you will refrain from taking such long hiatuses from the board as you did this year.

RMB2 - if you can re-find the article with KG quotes I would love to read it.
And ignore the noise, love all the articles you have posted - you are doing a great service for the rest of us lazy gits!:)

This one's for you UcM:

"I don’t care if the NCAA women’s tournament looks like a fore-Conn conclusion. I like watching a team play the game at a level rarely seen, all orchestrated by an Italian immigrant who just might be the most interesting coach in the world."

As someone who is his 40th year of teaching and thinks about it every day, I can honestly say that I've never known of a better teacher than Geno. And it's one thing to get it right most of the time in a classroom, but to get it right so often under the bright lights, it's not only about technique then, but it's largely, as you bring up Rocky, about character.

Outsiders--tend to see Geno as ARRogant and at times his teams.... With all the "exposure " Geno has had and public speaking opportunities I doubt he has had trouble walking across any court or stage or anything with a platform from which to speak!! Publick speaking does not come easily nor does the spot light--but once conquered--with continuous use, it gets easier
Geno may still keep his personal life close to his chest--but he's not fearful of the public stage any longer.

Geno un like some coaches, tells it like it is--no smoke no mirrors especially to recruits and their families!!! It appears to work..

This week in a podcast Geno again told it like it is. That instruction before college stinks and the kids are robbed of fundamentals. He talk dispassionately about the evils of continuous games and tournaments to draw in college scouts. I don't think, unfortunately, there is anything that can stop this dumbing down of basketball (boys included of course), but our man tells the truth.

Hmmm. I think Kia Nurse needs to sit down with Geno and tell him this is not the UConn way. LOL, just some light hearted sarcasm.

Rocky, keep the articles coming. I really enjoy reading each and everyone of them. As stated many, many times before, if not for UCONN there would be very little conversations or articles written about women's basketball. I to am an not ashamed to admit that I am a totally committed UCONN fan who hasn't missed attending or watching a game for the past 15 years. In fact, just returned from a cruise in the Caribbean where I paid an exorbitant fee to get an internet connection so that I could watch the games and stay connected to the boneyard. Wore my UCONN garb everyday and you wouldn't believe how many people stopped and talked to me about "our" team. So thanks Rocky for all your efforts.

Good article!

OT: Hope Solo as a role model??

"Does anyone look at two generations of American female soccer stars — Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd — and say they’re boring to watch because the U.S. wins all the time?

No, they’re celebrated as role models for young girls for their remarkable consistency. The only difference with UConn is the Huskies don’t represent the good ’ol USA, but they do represent a standard for young females to aspire to."

I suspect she doesn't have to do that.

Somewhere, deep in the bowels of Tennessee Athletics someone is taking screen shots of this. Will we ever forget. Oh, alex, I did what you asked and divided that big pile of large denomination bills into 18 piles and put them in those hotel laundry bags. Now what do I do. And, one more thing: Is it Rose Mary or Rosemary?

Kids don't care about courthouse shanannigans. Their fandom for Hope Solo is based on her play, and her approach to it. In that regard, she is a very good role model.
