Tough night for those 2. Were they Kalkbrennered?

I am curious as to why we are unable to get Sam free for the P&R to a lob a few times per game. Tough last night with Kalk just sitting in center field, but it was a weapon latter part of last year.

Can't figure out why Reed can't be Sanogo lite. He seems a bit slow in decision making processes, doesn't see what to do or react quickly. Are we suffering from our woes at the point?

Do neither of them possess the ability to dribble into the lane for a jumper when they are wide open? Not asking for a dribble drive, just dribbling 5-10 feet. Asked about this on the chat, someone said they are not allowed.

Sad if they truly are not capable, but I don't believe that. Can't they present some sort of challenge to the defense if they were to look for their shot, or be assertive or aggressive in some way offensively.

Well, you answered this yourself. Most of the year it was Diarra getting the screen for the PNR. He is not a threat offensively so there is no need to provide help. So the big just drops.

On the other hand, the opposing centers have been coached to not guard Samson or Reed anymore because they are not a threat. So there's no mismatch/opening for the lob. Last year, you had to come out and help on Tristen/Cam/Castle or they would kill you. It's kinda perplexing that we're still running these same sets over and over. It's legit playing 4 on 5.

The problem was when Johnson or Reed were on the floor Kalkbrenner was able to just park under the hoop as Johnson and Reed do not present any threat outside of the paint. Once we went small and Kalkbrenner had to defend the free throw extended the middle opened to allow for PNR and attacking the rim.

Everytime Johnson and Reed got the ball at the top there was a good 8-10 feet of open space that Kalkbrenner did not have to guard.

I'll say it again, those Big Ten assbags were right about Reed, Jr. He has the body. He has the game. But he does not have the engine. My own personal take on him, with zero evidence to prove it: I dont think that he is a DH guy. DH is too intense to like a guy as "up and down" as Reed, jr. Again, no evidence to support that. Just my opinion.

Sir, you are asking for the moon. At this point, all I want from both of us is not to commit bone headed, dumb fouls like fouling a 95% FT shooter from 40 feet out... Ripple effect from there, you cannot get into any game flow or rhythm when you are piling up fouls...

First, it took me about a minute to figure out what the title meant, I'm slow I guess.
1) We don't have guards that play well after the pick, there's just not much of a threat. Kalk can just sit back
2) Sanogo was a RARE player. That combination of footwork, hands and touch just doesn't come along very often.
3) That mid range jumper is frowned upon in todays game, rightfully so. Most teams don't want their BEST shooters taking those, let alone their worst shooters
4) They both had REALLY bad nights last night. They have both showed in the past that they are capable of different offensive skills, I think this is one of the biggest challenges to the staff this year to figure out how to best utilize them against different matchups. Last night was just a night to jump on Liam's back, and it worked.

I don’t think it’s the engine per se, more a lack of basketball IQ which isn’t ideal with the sets we run. Heck Danny all but said it in that behind the scenes look before the season saying Tarris is in La La Land half the time even during the team softball game.

Agree that Reed & Johnson need to "require" defenders to pay attention to them. They stand out at the free throw line unguarded. How bad can their shot be? Worse than Karaban? Worse than Ross? Just take a dribble and pop a 10 footer. Worried that it won't go in (think Karaban)? Force teams to defend 5 v 5.

So last night we had 6 turnovers and against St. John’s how many? 26?
We have to figure this out even though they are fouling and holding the crap out of us and it’s not being called.

The guards (guard) on this years team simply cannot get the ball inside to the Bigs in the flow of the offense.
Cam and Newton could and they are in the NBA partly because of that ability. Our inability to drive either to the rim or even the free throw line, has crippled the Bigs this year. I'm hoping McNeeley can fix that since he can create where other can't.

I think Reed will surprise a lot of people next year with more time to develop in Hurley's system. The two-headed monsters of Reed and Reibe will be a force. For now, Reed is what he is -- a solid if unspectacular center, with the ability to have some excellent games and the unfortunate tendency to disappear for stretches.

Why can't every 6'9 250lb kid with decent athleticism be Sanogo? Some people don't have the work ethic, ability to process the game, experience etc. Just part of life.

That being said, I honestly believe that Reed will be solid for us next year. He was essentially a blank slate at the beginning of this season. He needs refinement but has SO many elite pieces that just need to come together.

Spectacular physical ability/traits, unrefined and aloof.

Yeah I remember some people were saying Reed is more talented than Sanogo. He has talent, but Sanogo had gifts that we haven’t had in a low post big. I expect Reed to be good next year though. He needs 1 year in the system.
