Every single year before the season starts, whether it's Calhoun or Ollie, our coach has said that we want to get out and run. Every year, our team picks and chooses its spots to get out on the break, but for the most part is a half court team.

You can tell that it's different this year. Hurley is clearly teaching the outlet pass and has drilled it into their heads that after every rebound or turnover, you turn and immediately get it to one of the guards, or a big man if he's down the other side of the court. I can't remember a UConn team getting out on the break like this since the Final Four team in 2009. Just another thing to love about Hurley.

47 combined fast break points to start the season in just two games.

Took 2017-18 the first eight games of the season to hit that mark.
Took 2016-17 five games.
Took 2015-16 four games.
Took 2014-15 six games.
Took 2013-14 seven games.
Took 2012-13 five games.

Surprising that it took shabazz, boat, daniels, and giffey 7 games to hit the mark in 2014..wouldn’t have expected that from a team that finished as the 10th best defensive team in the country

They were great on defense in part because they limited possessions and part because they didn't have size or great rebounders. Bazz and Boat had to crash the glass, and when they grabbed it it was often in our best interest to be methodical. The slow down offense that let Bazz and Boat pick apart the opposing defense with an all-out defense designed to wear opposing guards out. Speeding the game up, somewhat paradoxically, hinders that.

I remember that team as a half court defensive squad that forced a low shooting percentage but didn’t pressure beyond half court and didn’t generate a huge number of steals.

Bazz one of the best rebounders we've ever had at the PG position!! Rebounding is largely desire and he had it and knew we needed it with reed-thin Brimah and Daniels at the 4/5.

I’m going to let you in s a little secret
This years team has to run to be successful at lest for the the first 15 games. That’s strength is a cover for some weaknesses.
JC’s teams after the early years didn’t have to run
They were mostly power teams
They did run in spots and generally were comfortable up tempo.
And KO’s teams never had the personal to sustain that style..
I think we saw a little of the break last year before Gilbert went down.
Again it was to cover even a weaker interior and worst shooting than this year.

it was great to know what dominating a team feels like again. Lets see if we can keep it up with Syracuse or at least just play with the same intensity. It's really hard to not like what you've seen regardless of the talent level.
