END REGULATION
Nick Chubb ran for 165 yards, including a decisive 73 yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and the Georgia Bulldogs hoisted the Purple Stein cup at the Mercedes-Benz Dome in Atlanta by downing SEC rival Alabama by a final score of 27-13. Alabama struck first with a 50 yard first quarter field goal, but the Bulldogs closed the half on a 17-0 run to take a 17-3 lead into the locker room. Alabama pulled within 17-13 in the third quarter before Chubb’s explosive run all but sealed the win.
The title game completed a tenuous tournament run for Georgia. After defeating Oklahoma State by two scores in the round of 16, the Bulldogs needed a last second defensive stand to hold off 6h seeded Wisconsin in the quarterfinals and a last minute field goal to defeat 7th seeded Auburn in the semis. The national title was never in such doubt – Georgia handled Alabama easily en route to their title.
Damien Harris ran for 128 yards for the Crimson Tide, while Bo Scarborough was limited to just 28 yards on ten carries. The Bulldogs, paced by Chubb’s 165 yards, ran for almost 350 yards in the game.
