He knew they loved each other in a way he could never be a part of with her but could not blame either of the two because it had been told to Ilsa that he was dead when they met. He also knew Rick didn't get seduced into giving the letters. He knew it was for the Cause. "Welcome back to the fight. This time I know our side will win".
