And ... then Rutgers loses by 102 to 54. Rick Pitino doesn't really ever call off the dogs; he doesn't seem to believe in mercy rules.
But, thinking about USF, UCF, Temple, Rutgers and Houston, I think part of what we have here is that the 5 other Programs are having very good years. Is Eddie Jordan and that Rutgers team so much worse than Rutgers & Mike Rice last year? Of course not. But they didn't get whipped by 50 points often. Now they also get taken to the woodshed by others. Temple beat SMU tonight (SMU has 6 away losses now ... a telling stat). USF can't be that far from where they were last year in the BE with Stan Heath; but, they didn't look like a competitive college team to me last week. Houston has great, great young athletes with size. And, as we saw, they have kids past the first 5. I can't imagine, though, that they are going to be competitive through a schedule with the Cincinnati/Memphis/UConn/Louisville level ... in the Dickey era. These Dregs? They are losing by monumental beatings far beyond what we ever were seeing with DePaul or really bad Seton Hall/St John's lineups.
The BE lower teams are now recruiting better (according to services). I think the UCF/USF/Houston athletic departments care about Sports. They will drive themselves to be competitive: by that, I mean there really isn't strong physical reasons ... like I might make about Seton Hall or Providence ... that they will NEVER compete at the highest level - with the right coach and getting the best athletes. I think any of those three can be done. Temple - we know that they can & should be competitive. They could be the dominant Program in Philly. Now they have better exposure. And Rutgers ... who cares about them? The B1G sees them in their glory. They suck across multiple sports.
