Who was the fourth? I remember Deacon Jones, Merlin Olson and Rosie Greer. Who was the Fearsome Fourthsome?

Deacon and Merlin were two of my favorites when I was a kid. RIP Deacon.

And in the category of I did not know that, Deacon sang with a group called Nightshift, which later became War (Cisco Kid, Lowrider).

Along with my Nolan Ryan rookie card and Mickey Mantle slightly off set card, my favorite card in my collection. There was always something very cool about the Deac, and being part of a Fearsome Foursome always sounded better than being in the Purple People Eaters.

For those who may not know, The PPE had cachet because it built on a popular novelty hit song around 1960.

Imagine not remembering the Purple People Eater. Age--with all its cultural memories--has its advantages.

Deacon was a cool dude and fun to watch.

But his patented head slap, which was perfectly legal back then, probably inflicted lots of damage.
