"He has since coached in 26 conference tournament title contests and 11 national championship games.

But never has UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma had a more nerve-wracking experience than the first time the Huskies played for the Big East Tournament crown. And he was not even at the arena.

Serving a school-imposed suspension for a scheduling matter, Auriemma stayed at the team hotel getting updates from Seton Hall’s Walsh Gymnasium over the phone from his wife, Kathy. It was only until 15 minutes after the Huskies had secured an 84-65 win over Providence that he could walk into the gym to celebrate with his players."

"The Huskies didn’t miss a beat.

“CD just made us feel so comfortable,” said Fiske, the analyst for UConn’s coverage on ESPN Radio. “She and Geno have always worked so well together so you knew we’d stay on the same page. Even though it was difficult circumstances and it was new for us, we were calm and focused.”

Thanks for the post. Bascom truly the stud on this team but Lishness and Davis were my favorites. Back then you didn't have to worry about getting tickets in advance or worrying about points for season ticket holders and parking was free. Most of the changes since then have been for the good but certainly miss those early days. That 1,800+ attendance for that Providence game was an anomaly.

Well the uniforms have definitely come a long way. Is that the tennis team?

Funny thing is we are about to come full circle on the men's and women's side of basketball. Short shorts are making their way back and that's better than the double or triple roll, the diaper (full) look or the Depends look. E.g. For college basketball players, long shorts might finally be taking a seat
Man, I hate the diaper look.
One thing which hasn't changed is that Geno insists on a uniform. No undershirts, under-leggings, everyone with the same sneakers, etc..
Couldn't agree more. Uniforms should be ... uniform.

It's why A'ja went to USC. She got to wear that uniform, shorts in particular, anyway she wanted and she sure did. ;););)

I have a great picture of that team in blue Uconn Uniforms. I can't determine any way I may copy that file and have it appear beyond a tiny thumbnail. I tried doing that a few times without success. I guess that is one memory for me alone.
