While doing the NCAA History of WCBB and the Conference history of the P5’s, I knew I would add in the Big East as it has a strong history and foundation of programs that are a who’s who of WCBB with Connecticut & Notre Dames as title winners, Louisville, Rutgers and Syracuse as runner-ups for the NCAA crown. This conference has had the most turnover of all the conferences with 22 current or former members. The conference first season was 1982-83 with both a regular season schedule and tournament. No surprises here as UConn, ND, DePaul and Rutgers lead the way. DePaul earning it’s numbers in the years since UConn and ND departed.

Geno and CD have dominated the Big East at a 75.8% success rate. The trend is even higher due to the early years of climbing the mountain from 1989 on. UConn was 406-89 in Big East games for 82% clip. The won 37 titles (19 seasons, 18 Tournaments) and finished 2nd 10 times. A far distant second was ND with 17 top 2 finishes, 4 Titles and a .784 win percentage. DePaul is next at 12 top 2s and a .712 win percentage.

What I think coalesced for me was the idea that Geno, MM and CVS all pushed each other to get better. What both Geno and MM have done is truly remarkable and without the Big East, it would not have happened. Add in Jeff Walz, Doug Bruno, Jose Fernandez, Harry Parretta and Mike Carey, you have some very long tenured, knowledgeable and talented coaches.

The real question is can Geno and company help drive the current schools to elevate their programs to a more prominent national standing? I have put an * by the current schools in the conference that we will soon be beating badly er, I meant joining....

Of note are the dregs of this conference-Georgetown being the most notable with a .397 win percentage. Xavier is trying to wrest that crown from GU with its paltry .259 win percentage! Lost in the title listing is how bad Providence has really been. They were a force early in the Big East’s history but have a woeful .373 success rate in conference play. Sorry Doris Burke!
