Polanski was able to reign in Johnny Depp and get a very nice, even understated, performance. In fact, all the performances are good. The movie moves at a pace that allows it to breathe yet still hold an audience. The supernatural elements are mosty hinted at which gives the piece a solid grounding. It is restrained and intelligent. Probably a two and a half star movie for most folks but was a three star for me. Very good film making by a great story teller.
