Thad Matta Retires from Butler

I just really don’t get why some of these larger basketball brand schools are so eager to hire individuals with no D1 head coaching experience, especially when the hire is in do or die territory to save the program from irrelevancy…. Just to “keep it in the brotherhood”

There are countless low and mid major head coaches who have won consistently at the D1 level on minimal resources.

Scott Cross, Eric Konkol, Takayo Siddle to name a few.

Surely ONE of those guys would jump at the opportunity to coach a storied program in the Big East, assuming Butler can get their NIL up to what the coach would want…

That’s not to say Ronald Nored can’t be a great coach. It’s just a riskier move when Butler desperately needs to get this hire right.
I think you mean why hire someone with no experience with NIL or the Portal

I trust nothing anymore. Next year's BY chats will be done by paper correspondence

He really did go to butler so it makes sense. Hope it really does happen.

Hope he works it out at Butler but I gotta say that I’m not impressed by this coaching search. At least it wasn’t Shrewsberry though

i'm not a fan of this hire. how many times has the "legacy guy with NBA experience but minimal college coaching background" ever worked out long-term? kinda thought we were past this as a sport.
Hello Mike Woodson.

Ah, Butler is going with the nostalgic route:

Just one year of NCAA coaching experience (an assistant at NKU ten years ago), but Nored has been an assistant w/ Charlotte, Indiana and Atlanta throughout the last seven years.

Seems like a stretch just to hire a former Butler guy but I hope it works out for them.

The biggest problem with NBA to College was recruiting and talent evaluation of 17 year old kids. Neither of those are a think anymore. Butler will not do a lot of direct from high school recruiting, and college coaching is becoming more of a leadership and X's and O's job.

The problem with upgrading coaches from mid-majors, like a Steele, is you don't know if he won because he had a bigger budget than the rest of his league.

I don't love this Nored hire, but I don't hate it either.

I am 50/50 on it, but Butler has stunk for awhile so they really can only go up from here.
