On the heels of a fifth gold medal with
USA Basketball that was earned at the FIBA U19 World Championship this past
summer, as well as her participation in the USA Basketball Women's National Team
mini-camp in October, Breanna Stewart (University of Connecticut/North Syracuse,
N.Y.) today was named the 2013 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year.

"It's a great honor," said Stewart, who also earned the USA Basketball Female
Athlete of the Year award in 2011. "I love competing with USA Basketball and
have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to do that for the last several
years. I'm so happy and thankful that USA Basketball has given me all the
opportunities it has to travel abroad and learn a lot."

Interesting that it took until 2006 for a UConn player two win the award, but for 5 straight years a Husky pedigree is required to win it.

This is why elite players come to UCONN...............National Championships, USA BB, All Americans and all games on National TV............Some elite players cannot handle this press coverage, TV coverage and being held to the highest standards of CD and Geno..............

Stewie will be such a joy to watch for the next 2-1/2 years, if you are a UConn fan. As said by the announcer in the Cal game about some of her shots:

"That's just ridiculous!"

"That's not fair!"

IIRC, she had 29 points and sat the last 7 minutes of the game.

I was amazed to learn that the Turner Broadcasting System had won the women's athlete of the year award.

Congrats! I thought this was announced a couple of months ago, or is this yet another award?

I was sitting in a bar in Armonk NY last night, when it occurred to be that they might have SNY. The channel was on some other sports event and I asked if they had SNY. If he said yes I was going to check with those watching, but he changed to the channel before I had a chance to ask. I half expected some feedback, but the guy closest to the TV was form Denver and his daughter plays for No. Colorado. He asked me to point out Brenna Stewart; I did and when I added she recently was named USA basketball Athlete of the Year, some down the other end of the bar chimed in, "for the second time". I was pleasantly surprised.
