So I received this message from someone on an Indiana message board regarding Taya. Apparently not everyone's opinions of Taya's mesh with mine and I am ok with that.

"Same guy from the UConn message board huh? The information you are posting on that board is 1) incorrect and 2) influencing recruits and their parents away from UConn. You should really know and understand what college coaches and evaluators say about Taya and the player and person she is before you trash her to all the UConn fans on that board. And the 6'5 girl who you quoted as dominating the sectional game averages 8 pts/game and had 14 that night. Dominating. She didn't guard Taya and Taya didn't guard her. And she is a senior, not a freshman. She has also been suspended from her HS team twice this season. Also, Taya has gone head to head with Morgan Tuck several times and numerous other UConn recruits and has never been eaten alive. Know your information before you speak. Kids deal with different styles of play and jealousies in high school and you should know that. There are all kinds of circumstances that influence whether you win a sectional as a TEAM or not. Taya averaged 20 and 10 as a junior for a team that was 20-0 and #1 in 4A all season. But her team has a devastating loss and you want to post about it in the way that you did. Really appreciate the negative vibes for the Indiana girls and especially Taya on the UConn board from you. Not sure why that gives you such pleasure. If the UConn fan base knew you were posting wrong information on that board, do you think they would take you seriously next time? And if Geno knew that you were influencing recruits, do you think he would appreciate that? Makes you wonder..."

My reply:

"I don't think Geno cares about my opinion. I could be completely wrong on Taya fitting in at UConn. If parents are worried about a message board - that's their problem.

I voice my own opinion. I'm not always going to agree with everyone else. If Taya and her family feel that UConn is the place for her - best wishes. I am not a hater and I will pull for her 100 percent (no matter where she plays) and as I said on the Boneyard, I could be wrong and end up eating crow and if so, I'll be happy to do it. I always root for the local kid - unless their playing against UConn :)"

I don't think I've ever TRASHED an Indiana kid-but feel I have been much more pro-Indiana. Hopefully everyone will enjoy having their own opinion. I feel this board allows us all to express what we believe. Hopefully my posting has no bearing on Ms. Reimer's choice.

Recruits do look at message boards and what not. Shabazz Muhammed the #1 player in the 2012 class on the mens side cancelled his official visit to Arizona because of something that was said about him on the Arizona message board.

Well that was a mature thing to do with one of the biggest decisions of his life.

BBall, I can't find anything in your post from Wednesday that would lead to that form of reaction. I don't see you trashing Taya; your thread was that her team lost. Perhaps you were incorrect concerning Taylor being a freshman, but you didn't say Taya was guarding her. I can't figure that response from royalpride out. It's almost as if someone is trying to build a fire to influence Taya away from UConn.

No experience with royalpride, but quite a bit with bruinbball. Royalpride looks like your classic fashioner of a mountain from a mole hill. Has he/she got a short fuse, or perhaps an agenda?

Bball, you have always been one of the most balanced and reasonable posters on the Boneyard. You are always fair to the kids even when making evaluations. Best thing you could do was post the note and let it speak for itself.

If a kid or family member reacts to a post as noted in MarieM's post then I don't know that that is a kid you want anyway. Geno has decided against recruiting kids before on the basis potential family issues or because kids don't have the right personality to fit in the program.

This is not aimed at anybody or singling out anybody but should be read by everybody. I do know of recruits who didnt go to schools because of what was posted on message boards. When nasty things are posted it hurts espeically parents of the child who was mentioned. Most parents are proud of their kids and what theyve accomplished and when somebody says something critical about them it hurts. Now with that said as a parent if you read one nasty comment about your daughter on a board you think hey shes not evern there yet can you imagine what they will say when shes there. Make sense. How would you like to read a post about your daughter where someone knocks them. Word of caution when posting about recruits. Be Positive as much as possible. It really dosnt matter what you think how parents should feel, they feel the way they feel and we all need to respect that. If you think Im wrong read the comments on this board about other boards and teams who are going through tuff times right now. Its everybodys fault. Just think we are all in the catagory of everybody. So when one poster posts something negitive its about all of us, its about the Uconn board, we are all included in everybody.

Agreed Tonyc. I have no agenda against Taya. It would be great to see another Indiana kid on UConn. I have looked back through all of my posts where I mentioned her and do not see anything that warranted this message.

I don't know royalpride but I am sorry they felt that badly about my posts.

So I received this message from someone on an Indiana message board
Royalpride would appear to be acting out of . . . well, Royal Pride pride.

It's the nickname of Taya's high school. So, it's at least a fan of the school, if not someone closer to Taya.

To state the painfully obvious, we have hundreds of people who post information and opinions here. We much appreciate eyewitness accounts and opinions about player prospects as well as media accounts.

We've known for a long time that you call 'em like you see 'em, Bruin. Others here are free to agree or disagree, in a civil way, as is Royalpride. Opinions are even free to change as new information comes in.

If facts are incorrect, we value people speaking up, in a nice way. Royalpride could come here and do so, for that matter.

I share the views of others in this thread about what we can conclude from recruiting decisions that would really be influenced by one person's sincere effort to make an objective evaluation on a fan message board.

Royalpride, if you haven't done so, visit the message boards of other schools Taya is considering. See what those boards say about the size, enthusiasm, diversity and knowledge of their team's fan base. See what they say about supportive attitudes toward the players.

Would you then think Taya should be influenced in favor of a particular school if you find one post on its message board (assuming there is one) you like? That'd be the equivalent of the consequence you attach to Bruin's post, and good luck with it.

IMO, RoyalPride probably had more of a problem with bruin's subject line (Taya's team goes down!) than anything. It must have been the exclamation mark that annoyed him/her and predisposed Royal to dislike whatever bruin said. Or perhaps Royal misread another person's opinion and attributed it to bruin. I saw the comments bruin made and didn't think them harsh - I wouldn't worry about it.

Huskies recruit emotionally tough kids who use criticism as motivation to get better a la Miss Tina. I have a tough time thinking that a kid swayed by posters would be able to handle what they will face in college. Besides, if trashing recruits really worked, we'd have lots of fake posts to deal with both for and against the Huskies.

Nasty things are not going to be posted here because we won't allow 'em. We have a rule against trashing players, including those who play elsewhere than UConn.

There's no rule that posts about a player's game must be positive. Just that they must be reasonable and civil in tone and, to the extent they comment negatively, not personal.

TONY I TOTALLY AGREE... especially when you know UConn is currently looking/recruiting the student.

and to add... putting down other team's players is just as bad.

cheer on UConn all you want but dont do it at the expense of other players

this isnt about the player having tough skin... its about the family member/friend skin which can influence the player's decision.

I agree. I find it very hard to imagine that a basketball recruit's decision about what college she wants to attend would depend in even the smallest way on the comments of any relatively anonymous person on a basketball posting board.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

An exclamation point could be viewed as expressing "stunning, notable development", but could have been misread as "yeah, some team lost".

Anyone who knows bruin knows it was the first, but if you didn't know bruin, and were close tot he program, just suffering a painful loss, you might have mistakenly thought it was the second.

Good point Phil. I was stating it as a notable development as the 4A #1 ranked 20-0 team that went undefeated in the regular season loses in the 1st round of their sectional play. I think that is definitely a stunning development. The team that beat HSE did go on to win that sectional.

In any case, if you are a UCONN fan, the upside of critique for a recruit is...??

Just my two cents - I think this board's moderators do a good job of policing the posts and where merited, steering us all away from inappropriate posts, topics, etc. The general level of discourse is very high, and the level of snide, snipping, and offensive posts is very low. So ... three cheers!!!
I think any fan based college message board is fraught with dangers in relation to recruiting and one should be careful when posting about possible recruits. That said, I haven't seen anything from BB or elsewhere that I thought was a problem here.
